{"id":24039,"date":"2022-05-11T12:11:36","date_gmt":"2022-05-11T12:11:36","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/broadnews\/?p=24039"},"modified":"2022-05-11T12:11:36","modified_gmt":"2022-05-11T12:11:36","slug":"german-ngo-builds-2nd-noma-treatment-centre","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/broadnews\/2022\/05\/11\/german-ngo-builds-2nd-noma-treatment-centre\/","title":{"rendered":"German NGO builds 2nd Noma Treatment Centre"},"content":{"rendered":"<header class=\"entry-header\" aria-label=\"Content\"><\/header>\n<div class=\"entry-content\">\n<p>A German Non-Governmental Organisation (NGO), Hilfasktion Noma eV, has<br \/>\nstarted building the second National Noma Treatment Centre in Abuja.<\/p>\n<p>The group, now known as the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/broadnews\/2022\/05\/10\/2023-we-are-committed-to-putting-nigeria-in-fast-lane-of-devt-diaspora-group\/\">Nigeria<\/a> Aids Noma Initiative (NANI), will build a 100-bed capacity Noma Treatment Centre,<br \/>\noffer free reconstruction surgery to children with the disease and also provide for their feeding and schooling while<br \/>\nundergoing treatment.<\/p>\n<p>The Minister of Health, Dr Osagie Ehanire, said during the ground-breaking ceremony for the centre in Abuja that<br \/>\nNoma disease\u00a0is no longer found in developed countries of the world.<\/p>\n<p>Reports have it that Noma or cancrum oris is as an infectious and non-contagious disease<br \/>\nwhich rapidly eats away soft tissue and bones around the face.<\/p>\n<p>NAN also reports that eating the soft tissue and bones results in an awful disfigurement that does not fail to draw attention.<\/p>\n<p>The minister, therefore, said that \u201cthe <a href=\"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/broadnews\/2022\/04\/23\/environmental-sanitation-key-to-disease-prevention-nysc-dg\/\">disease<\/a> is a public health problem in low and middle income countries, where severe<br \/>\neconomic disparity affects lives and development of children.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u00a0progresses rapidly and if left untreated, the patient\u2019s condition can become\u00a0life threatening.\u2019\u2019<\/p>\n<p>Ehanire said that Noma had a mortality rate of up to 90 per cent, adding that \u201calmost invariably affects children from the age<br \/>\nof two to six years, with poor health status defined by abject poverty and malnutrition.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThose who survive it suffer life-long disfigurement\u00a0from defects of the face that makes eating, speaking and social relationships<br \/>\ndifficult. Social exclusion and stigma are the result.\u2019\u2019<\/p>\n<p>The minister explained that Noma disease is primarily an illness that thrives under severe malnutrition, neglected oral health and<br \/>\npersonal hygiene and poor environmental sanitation.<\/p>\n<p>He said that the predisposing factors are\u00a0vitamin deficiencies, opportunistic infections, including measles and malaria, and\u00a0any<br \/>\nimmune compromising condition.<\/p>\n<p>According to him, the disease\u00a0is preventable if above mentioned modifiable risk factors are\u00a0addressed, while routine and<br \/>\npublic preventive health and immunisation\u00a0 programmes reach target populations.<br \/>\nHe added that early detection and treatment of Noma could\u00a0reverse the devastating impact and be a life-saver.<\/p>\n<p>He said that a 70-bed Noma Children\u2019s Hospital in<a href=\"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/broadnews\/2022\/02\/26\/fg-to-recommend-sokoto-state-stadium-for-international-sports-events\/\"> Sokoto State<\/a> which was established in 1999 and\u00a0treats patients in that<br \/>\nsub-region is the only facility in Nigeria till date.<\/p>\n<p>He added that \u201cthis new centre will hopefully give more visibility to a disease that many do not know about, making it<br \/>\nactually a neglected ailment that should no longer exist, given the economic potential of our country.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe purpose of our gathering here today, however, is to say welcome to\u00a0Hilfasktion Noma eV, now known as NANI,<br \/>\nunder\u00a0whose auspices we are \u00a0laying the foundation stone of the second Noma\u00a0Treatment Centre in Nigeria.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe Federal\u00a0Ministry of Health and the people of Nigeria deeply appreciate the interest, perseverance and sacrifice<br \/>\nof the Winkler Family of Germany, whose story of true philanthropy must be told.\u2019\u2019<\/p>\n<p>The World Health Organisation (WHO) Country Representative, Dr Walter Mulombo, said nine out of 10 children<br \/>\ndie from the disease, adding that poor hygiene and diseases like measles weakens the immune system.<\/p>\n<p>Represented by Dr Alexander Chimbaru, Mulombo said those who survive suffer from disfigurement and stigmatization.<\/p>\n<p>He said \u201cwe have supported the Federal Ministry of Health to build capacity, even at the state level on preventive care.<\/p>\n<p>He added that the second Noma Centre would go a long way in serving patients.<\/p>\n<p>The Chief Medical Director (CMD) of National Hospital Abuja (NHA),<br \/>\nDr Jaf Momoh, said that the facility, when completed, would\u00a0serve Nigeria and neighbouring countries where Noma cases are found.<\/p>\n<p>He added that \u201cthis place is central and patients can be transported here more easily to undergo specialised care,<br \/>\nparticularly the reconstruction part of the Noma treatment.\u2019\u2019<\/p>\n<p>Momoh said \u201cthe disease disfigures the face, the muscles and even the bone of the mouth.\u2019\u2019<\/p>\n<p>He explained that treatment would require maxillofacial surgeons, plastic surgeons and dentists to fix and rearrange<br \/>\nthe teeth and even speech therapists, all of whom were readily available at NHA.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>A German Non-Governmental Organisation (NGO), Hilfasktion Noma eV, has started building the second National Noma Treatment Centre in Abuja.
