{"id":24313,"date":"2022-05-13T09:47:30","date_gmt":"2022-05-13T09:47:30","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/broadnews\/?p=24313"},"modified":"2022-05-13T09:47:30","modified_gmt":"2022-05-13T09:47:30","slug":"africa-needs-to-finance-her-growth-emefiele","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/broadnews\/2022\/05\/13\/africa-needs-to-finance-her-growth-emefiele\/","title":{"rendered":"Africa needs to finance her growth &#8211; Emefiele"},"content":{"rendered":"<header class=\"entry-header\" aria-label=\"Content\">\n<p class=\"entry-title\"><span style=\"font-size: 16px\">The Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), Godwin Emefiele, says that Africa needs to finance her own growth.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/header>\n<div class=\"entry-content\">\n<p>Emefiele made this known at the Africa Finance Corporation (AFC) Live Infrastructure Solutions Summit held in Abuja on Thursday.<\/p>\n<p>According to him, over the past two years, Africa had suffered crises each with profound implications for the economies of the continent.<\/p>\n<p>Emefiele, represented by his Deputy and Board Chairman of AFC, Dr Kingsley Obiora, said the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/broadnews\/2022\/05\/12\/india-reduces-gap-for-covid-19-booster-dose-for-travellers-abroad\/\"><strong>COVID-19 crisis<\/strong> <\/a>with its lockdown triggered off recession in most parts of the world.<\/p>\n<p>He said that the crisis injected a fresh urgency for Africa\u2019s rise in self-reliance on the manufacturing and processing of essential products.<\/p>\n<p>He further said that the crisis in Ukraine also had economic implications on the African continent.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cClearly, amid challenges of inflation, economic growth, conflict and food and energy shortages, we are also at a reflection point today to shift the course of history for decades to come.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAfrica must seize the opportunity. We owe it to our children and future generations.<br \/>\n\u201cSo what is the right path ahead?<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAs CBN governor, the path begins with finance.<br \/>\n\u201cOur future depends on strengthening Africa\u2019s capacity to finance our own growth.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Yet Africa\u2019s financing needs are growing and will only get bigger as our population expands,\u201d Emefiele said.<\/p>\n<p>According to him, the key is in unlocking new sources of funding, both domestic and international.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThey are locked in pension funds, insurance companies, sovereign wealth funds, and mutual funds.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe are limited only by our ability to reduce risks for investors and find simple, steady and creditable competitive returns,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>The CBN boss further said that over the years, the apex bank had played a leading role in investment and resource mobilisation, such as what had been achieved by the AFC.<\/p>\n<p>He said that CBN deployed an initial 500 million dollars in investment in AFC, 15 years on, the cooperation had a balance sheet of over 10 billion dollars in investment in 35 countries.<\/p>\n<p>Emefiele also recalled that in 2021, the CBN and the Nigerian Sovereign Investment Authority under Vice President Yemi Osinbajo launched the Infrastructure Corporation of Nigeria.<\/p>\n<p>He described it as a world-class infrastructure development vehicle focused on tackling Nigeria\u2019s 100 billion dollar annual infrastructure needs.<\/p>\n<p>Emefiele said that the AFC\u2019s core mission is to help Africa close its infrastructure deficit, create prosperity and jobs for the youths and for overcoming historical development challenges, once and for all.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cClimate considerations are an inextricable part of AFC\u2019s approach, from building infrastructure that will be resilient against extreme weather to developing ecosystems that can focus on the industries of the future in electric vehicles and renewable energy.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAt the same time, AFC is determined to include the energy deficit that stiffens Africa\u2019s development and opportunities,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>He said that in addition to renewable energy, natural gas, must be a fundamental part of Africa\u2019s policy response to the energy challenges.<\/p>\n<p>He said: \u201cWe are operating in an ever complex, challenging and competitive global economic environment.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe all have a role to play in raising funding from both domestic sources and international funding and making sure we are deploying this capital effectively and at speed to support double-digit growth. \u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhen investors look at projects in Africa, they should suffer from fear of missing out.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMissing out on investment returns and missing out on creating a bigger social and environmentally positive impact that can be attained anywhere possible.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He called on African governments, central banks, corporate leaders and investors to rally together and be bolder in \u201cour ambitions and support our continental champions and institutions like AFC.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cLet us be bold in our ambitions, steadfast and urgent in our execution,\u201d Emefiele said.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), Godwin Emefiele, says that Africa needs to finance her own growth.
