{"id":26054,"date":"2022-05-25T08:29:47","date_gmt":"2022-05-25T08:29:47","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/broadnews\/?p=26054"},"modified":"2022-05-25T08:29:47","modified_gmt":"2022-05-25T08:29:47","slug":"tax-compliance-should-be-a-prerequisite-for-clearing-political-aspirants-firs-tasks-inec","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/broadnews\/2022\/05\/25\/tax-compliance-should-be-a-prerequisite-for-clearing-political-aspirants-firs-tasks-inec\/","title":{"rendered":"Tax compliance should be a prerequisite for clearing political aspirants &#8211; FIRS tasks INEC"},"content":{"rendered":"<header class=\"entry-header\" aria-label=\"Content\">The Federal Inland Revenue Service (FIRS), has recommended tax compliance as prerequisite for clearing aspirants to contest for elective positions.<\/header>\n<div class=\"entry-content\">\n<p>The Executive Chairman of FIRS and Chairman, Joint Tax Board (JTB) Muhammad Nami made the recommendation at a meeting with the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/broadnews\/2022\/05\/22\/2023-elections-group-renews-call-for-shifting-of-inec-deadline-on-party-primaries\/\"><strong>Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC)<\/strong><\/a> in Abuja on Tuesday.<\/p>\n<p>The meeting was also attended by the Chief Executive Officers of the Code of Conduct Bureau and the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC).<\/p>\n<p>The meeting was aimed at strengthening collaboration among the agencies to ensure tax compliance among candidates in the upcoming elections.<\/p>\n<p>According to Nami, there is the need to promote measures aimed at strengthening the capacity for sustainable and inclusive tax administration in the country.<\/p>\n<p>He said that whoever does not pay tax should not be given tax payers money to superintend.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt is important that political office holders pay their right taxes to enable the tax agencies channel the funds for national development.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTax payment has become a secondary matter because some of us are benefiting from social amenities achieved from money from oil,\u2019\u2019 he said.<\/p>\n<p>While emphasising that tax revenue was the most effective and sustainable way for generating funds required to drive social economy, Nami called for a reorientation that would make every income earner pay tax.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe challenge we face as a nation is that the tax Gross Domestic Product (GDP) in Nigeria is about the lowest in the whole world.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe must get our tax right. We must have a reorientation or reconstruction of our tax code.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTax compliance is a constitutional obligation and it is our duty to ensure that every eligible citizen pays his or her tax promptly and\u00a0accurately.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe 2023\u00a0election presents an opportunity for us to ensure the effective compliance of every political actor to show case his tax agenda as part of prerequisite for 2023 elections, \u201d Nami said.<\/p>\n<p>He further said that anyone whose tax status was not in harmony with their declared records should not be entrusted with public office.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTax compliance, therefore, should be approved for holding political office as this is a global practice,\u2019\u2019 the FIRS boss said.<\/p>\n<p>On his part, the INEC Chairman, Prof. Mahmood Yakubu said \u201cno specific law makes it mandatory for candidates for election to present evidence of payment of tax before they could contest election\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>He, however, pledged INEC\u2019s commitment to relevant agencies to ensure that public office holders complied with Nigeria\u2019s constitution and relevant laws, including payment of tax.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere is no specific law that makes it mandatory for candidates for election to present evidence of payment of tax before they can contest.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBut we understand the importance of this collaboration and we will collaborate with you.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAll candidates for elected offices are required to complete the INEC nomination forms and to swear to an affidavit that they have fully and faithfully provided the requisite information to the commission.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe will collaborate with sister agencies to provide whatever information you require to facilitate your constitutional roles.<\/p>\n<p>\u201c Leadership comes with enormous responsibilities at both the executive and legislative levels, and persons entrusted with that responsibility must respect the constitution and laws of this country.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd that is why agencies responsible for ensuring compliance with the constitution and laws of this government just like INEC have fully supported,\u201d Yakubu said.<\/p>\n<p>The Chairman of ICPC, Bolaji Owasanoye, said that \u201cfalse records presented by some public office holders is reflecting in the kind of governance in some places\u201d.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The Federal Inland Revenue Service (FIRS), has recommended tax compliance as prerequisite for clearing aspirants to contest for elective positions.
