{"id":26307,"date":"2022-05-26T15:09:53","date_gmt":"2022-05-26T15:09:53","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/broadnews\/?p=26307"},"modified":"2022-05-26T15:09:53","modified_gmt":"2022-05-26T15:09:53","slug":"london-to-probe-french-billionaires-bt-stake-over-security-fears","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/broadnews\/2022\/05\/26\/london-to-probe-french-billionaires-bt-stake-over-security-fears\/","title":{"rendered":"London to probe French billionaire\u2019s BT stake over security fears"},"content":{"rendered":"<header class=\"entry-header\" aria-label=\"Content\">\n<p class=\"entry-title\">British Business Secretary, Kwasi Kwarteng, has told BT that the government would examine French billionaire, Patrick Drahi\u2019s increased 18 per cent stake in the telecommunications company over national security concerns.<\/p>\n<\/header>\n<div class=\"entry-content\">\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Altice, the telecoms company\u2019s biggest shareholder, increased its stake from 12.1 per cent to 18 per cent in December last year.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">This increases fears that the business could be ripe for a takeover.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">The British government would now seek to examine the move using \u201ccall-in powers\u201d under the new <a href=\"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/broadnews\/2022\/01\/25\/nsa-identifies-covid-19-as-emerging-biological-threats-to-national-security\/\"><strong>National Security and Investment Act<\/strong><\/a>.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Kwarteng would have the power to either clear the move, or, if necessary and proportionate, impose certain conditions on the investment or block it completely.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">\u201cBT Group will fully co-operate with this review,\u201d the company said in a statement.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">On announcing his investment last year, Drahi said he had no plans to take the business private, as he snapped up a further 585 million shares to increase his stake.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">The government said it was \u201cmonitoring\u201d the investment at the time.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>British Business Secretary, Kwasi Kwarteng, has told BT that the government would examine French billionaire, Patrick Drahi\u2019s increased 18 per cent stake in the telecommunications company over national security concerns.
