{"id":26358,"date":"2022-05-27T04:47:24","date_gmt":"2022-05-27T04:47:24","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/broadnews\/?p=26358"},"modified":"2022-05-27T04:47:24","modified_gmt":"2022-05-27T04:47:24","slug":"expert-calls-for-need-to-formalise-multidisciplinary-care-in-cancer-management","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/broadnews\/2022\/05\/27\/expert-calls-for-need-to-formalise-multidisciplinary-care-in-cancer-management\/","title":{"rendered":"Expert calls for need to formalise multidisciplinary care in cancer management"},"content":{"rendered":"<header class=\"entry-header\" style=\"color: #222222;font-family: -apple-system, system-ui, BlinkMacSystemFont, 'Segoe UI', Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif, 'Apple Color Emoji', 'Segoe UI Emoji', 'Segoe UI Symbol';font-size: 17px\" aria-label=\"Content\"><\/header>\n<div class=\"entry-content\" style=\"margin-top: 2em;color: #222222;font-family: -apple-system, system-ui, BlinkMacSystemFont, 'Segoe UI', Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif, 'Apple Color Emoji', 'Segoe UI Emoji', 'Segoe UI Symbol';font-size: 17px\">\n<p style=\"margin: 0px 0px 1.5em;padding: 0px;border: 0px\">Prof. Adesoji Ademuyiwa, Head, Paediatric Surgery, Lagos University Teaching Hospital (LUTH), has called for need to formalise multidisciplinary care in cancer management.<\/p>\n<p style=\"margin: 0px 0px 1.5em;padding: 0px;border: 0px\">Ademuyiwa spoke withour correspondent on Thursday, on the sideline of the 2nd LUTH international Scientific Workshop and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/broadnews\/2022\/05\/12\/gov-uzodimma-sets-up-committee-ahead-of-planned-security-conference\/\">Conference<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p style=\"margin: 0px 0px 1.5em;padding: 0px;border: 0px\">The conference has as its theme, \u201cAdvances in Cancer Management in 21st Century\u201d, with sub theme, \u201cMultdisciplinary Care in Cancer Management\u201d.<\/p>\n<p style=\"margin: 0px 0px 1.5em;padding: 0px;border: 0px\">Ademuyiwa, who is also the Hub Director, National Institute of Health Research, Global Surgery Unit, Nigeria Network, said that multidisciplinary care in cancer management had been on for decades.<\/p>\n<p style=\"margin: 0px 0px 1.5em;padding: 0px;border: 0px\">He said that the conference had brought it to the fore that there was need to formalise and have a multidisciplinary team as they move <a href=\"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/broadnews\/2022\/03\/24\/taf-affirms-govt-assistance-to-treatment-of-members-with-skin-cancer\/\">cancer treatment<\/a> forward.<\/p>\n<p style=\"margin: 0px 0px 1.5em;padding: 0px;border: 0px\">According to him, LUTH is the foremost teaching hospital in cancer care, not only in Nigeria and West Africa but the sub-Saharan Africa.<\/p>\n<p style=\"margin: 0px 0px 1.5em;padding: 0px;border: 0px\">He said that the Federal Government invested a lot in the LUTH Cancer Centre with state-of-the-art facility through the National Sovereign Investment Authority (NSIA).<\/p>\n<p style=\"margin: 0px 0px 1.5em;padding: 0px;border: 0px\">\u201cWhat medical practitioners are trying to do now is to introduce this multidisciplinary care to make sure that Nigerian practitioners flow with the rest of the world,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p style=\"margin: 0px 0px 1.5em;padding: 0px;border: 0px\">He said that the role of surgeons was to physically remove the cancerous cells in the body.<\/p>\n<p style=\"margin: 0px 0px 1.5em;padding: 0px;border: 0px\">He advised Nigerians to seek care from experts on cancer diagnosis at <a href=\"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/broadnews\/2022\/05\/20\/kaduna-govt-validates-health-financing-policy-for-equitable-access-to-healthcare\/\">health<\/a> facilities like LUTH.<\/p>\n<p style=\"margin: 0px 0px 1.5em;padding: 0px;border: 0px\">He said that at LUTH there were facilities for dialysis, treatment and psychological support for patients, unlike places that promise care with no scientific basis for such care.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Prof. Adesoji Ademuyiwa, Head, Paediatric Surgery, Lagos University Teaching Hospital (LUTH), has called for need to formalise multidisciplinary care in cancer management.
