{"id":26537,"date":"2022-05-27T19:49:36","date_gmt":"2022-05-27T19:49:36","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/broadnews\/?p=26537"},"modified":"2022-05-27T19:49:36","modified_gmt":"2022-05-27T19:49:36","slug":"how-unity-bank-yanga-will-empower-underbanked-women-entrepreneurs-official","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/broadnews\/2022\/05\/27\/how-unity-bank-yanga-will-empower-underbanked-women-entrepreneurs-official\/","title":{"rendered":"How Unity Bank \u2018yanga\u2019 will empower underbanked women entrepreneurs \u2013 Official"},"content":{"rendered":"<header class=\"entry-header\" aria-label=\"Content\"><\/header>\n<div class=\"entry-content\">\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"> Mr Olufunwa Akinmade, Divisional Head, Retail, SME Banking and E-Business, Unity Bank Plc, has described the bank\u2019s latest retail product \u2018Yanga\u2019 as a unique product aimed at empowering the underbanked women entrepreneurs in Nigeria.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Akinmade, who stated this during a chat with the media on Friday, noted that a recent EFInA report revealed that 41 per cent of 51 million <a href=\"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/broadnews\/2022\/05\/25\/2023-elections-prp-female-presidential-aspirant-urges-nigerians-to-stop-gender-bias\/\">Nigerian<\/a> women above 18 years were unbanked.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Out of these figures, Akinmade noted that between 14 and 18 million were female entrepreneurs; mainly in the Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises (MSME) category.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">He added that only 22 per cent of female entrepreneurs had access to finance against 34 per cent of their male counterparts.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Akinmade said the product provided an easy to operate and free to open savings account, with no identification required, customised debit card and dedicated sales officers.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">He added that Yanga\u2019s other unique features included special banking agents in each market location and quarterly seminars at main market locations anchored by the bank and its alliance partners.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">\u201cRecall that Unity Bank launched the women-focused Yanga account in November 2021 to promote financial inclusion and cater to unbanked women <a href=\"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/broadnews\/2021\/12\/20\/nysc-katsina-wins-2021-skills-acquisition-entrepreneurship-development-competition\/\">entrepreneurs<\/a> across Nigeria in the MSME space.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">\u201cTherefore, the new retail product is designed to deepen its beneficial impact on MSMEs, operated by women in the mass-market retail space.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">\u201cThese women have proved beyond reasonable doubt that they have the capacity to create wealth and contribute productively to the economy,\u201d he said.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">However, he added that a lot more needed to be done, starting with empowering them with the right tools to harness their entrepreneurship potential.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">\u201cCurrently, they face many institutional and cultural hurdles, while starting or running their businesses.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">\u201cThis is part of why we have introduced Yanga to bridge this gap while also narrowing the population of underbanked women entrepreneurs,\u201d he said.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">He furthered said the Unity Bank Yanga product would play a critical role in boosting financial inclusion.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">\u201cBy rolling out this scheme across all geopolitical regions, Unity bank\u2019s objective is to work assiduously towards reducing the huge numbers of underbanked women in the country.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">\u201cA key part of the Yanga product experience is micro-loans and Health Maintenance <a href=\"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/broadnews\/2022\/05\/17\/faith-based-organisations-partner-with-fg-on-ending-drug-abuse\/\">Organisations<\/a> (HMO) offering.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">\u201cThe micro-loan would be availed with time-tested credit policies, backed with technology-based credit scoring to help detect frivolous applications as well as reduce NPLs.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">\u201cThe Bank is currently conducting market activations in strategic locations across the country with its brand ambassador, popular Nollywood actor, Sola Sobowale.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">\u201cSo far, the Yanga activation train has been to Gombe, Akwa Ibom, and Ibadan and is currently in Lagos and en-route Port Harcourt,\u201d he said.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Mr Olufunwa Akinmade, Divisional Head, Retail, SME Banking and E-Business, Unity Bank Plc, has described the bank\u2019s latest retail product \u2018Yanga\u2019 as a unique product aimed at empowering the underbanked women entrepreneurs in Nigeria.
