{"id":26796,"date":"2022-05-30T05:15:14","date_gmt":"2022-05-30T05:15:14","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/broadnews\/?p=26796"},"modified":"2022-05-30T05:15:14","modified_gmt":"2022-05-30T05:15:14","slug":"mpc-raising-interest-rate-ll-reduce-loanable-funds-for-investment-economist","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/broadnews\/2022\/05\/30\/mpc-raising-interest-rate-ll-reduce-loanable-funds-for-investment-economist\/","title":{"rendered":"MPC: Raising interest rate \u2018ll reduce loanable funds for investment \u2014 Economist"},"content":{"rendered":"<header class=\"entry-header\" aria-label=\"Content\">\n<h1 class=\"entry-title\"><span style=\"font-size: 16px\">An economist, Prof. Evans Osabuohien,\u00a0 on Sunday said raising the benchmark interest rate from 11.5 per cent to 13\u00a0 by the Monetary Policy Committee (MPC) of Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) would\u00a0 reduce loanable funds for investment.<\/span><\/h1>\n<\/header>\n<div class=\"entry-content\">\n<div dir=\"auto\">Osabuohien, a Senior Lecturer, Department of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/broadnews\/2022\/05\/27\/retirement-plan-nis-boss-tasks-civil-servants-on-strategic-investment\/\">Economics<\/a>, Covenant University, Ota, Ogun, made the observation in an interview with our correspondent on Sunday.<\/div>\n<div dir=\"auto\"><\/div>\n<div dir=\"auto\">He noted that there was the need to control liquidity as the report from the apex bank indicated that there was a higher demand for forex.<\/div>\n<div dir=\"auto\"><\/div>\n<div dir=\"auto\">\u201cThe development resulted to a situation where naira was falling against dollar, which was not good for the economy.<\/div>\n<div dir=\"auto\"><\/div>\n<div dir=\"auto\">\u201cIn addition, the decision of the MPC will reduce money demand and impact downward the inflation rate in the country,\u201d he said.<\/div>\n<div dir=\"auto\"><\/div>\n<div dir=\"auto\">Osabuohien added that this would also affect loanable funds for investment in the short run, adding that development would get better in the long run.<\/div>\n<div dir=\"auto\"><\/div>\n<div dir=\"auto\">The economist advised the Federal Government to create enabling environment for real sector to thrive, so that more goods could be provided, thus reducing heavy dependence on foreign goods<\/div>\n<div dir=\"auto\"><\/div>\n<div dir=\"auto\">Osabuohien said that the heavy dependence on imported goods had not helped the country in any way because the dollar would be used for the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/broadnews\/2022\/01\/14\/transactions-will-accelerate-in-africa-through-pan-african-payment-system-president-akufo-addo\/\">transaction<\/a> of those imported goods, which was at expense of naira.<\/div>\n<div dir=\"auto\"><\/div>\n<div dir=\"auto\">Reports have it that the MPC of the apex bank, had on Tuesday in Abuja after the two-day meeting, announced the raising of the benchmark interest rate from 11.5\u00a0 to 13 per cent.<\/div>\n<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>An economist, Prof. Evans Osabuohien,\u00a0 on Sunday said raising the benchmark interest rate from 11.5 per cent to 13\u00a0 by the Monetary Policy Committee (MPC) of Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) would\u00a0 reduce loanable funds for investment.
