{"id":26800,"date":"2022-05-30T05:04:34","date_gmt":"2022-05-30T05:04:34","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/broadnews\/?p=26800"},"modified":"2022-05-30T05:04:34","modified_gmt":"2022-05-30T05:04:34","slug":"nigeria-to-enjoy-preferential-trade-access-to-u-s-market-envoy","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/broadnews\/2022\/05\/30\/nigeria-to-enjoy-preferential-trade-access-to-u-s-market-envoy\/","title":{"rendered":"Nigeria to enjoy preferential trade access to U.S. market\u2014envoy"},"content":{"rendered":"<header class=\"entry-header\" aria-label=\"Content\">\n<h1 class=\"entry-title\"><span style=\"font-size: 16px\">\u00a0The U.S. Ambassador to Nigeria, Mary Leonard, says Nigeria will continue to be eligible for preferential trade access to U.S. market under the African Growth and Opportunity Act (AGOA).<\/span><\/h1>\n<\/header>\n<div class=\"entry-content\">\n<div dir=\"auto\">\n<div dir=\"auto\">Leonard said this when she visited the Minister of Industry, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/broadnews\/2022\/05\/27\/retirement-plan-nis-boss-tasks-civil-servants-on-strategic-investment\/\">Trade and Investment,<\/a> Otunba Adeniyi Adebayo.<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div dir=\"auto\"><\/div>\n<div dir=\"auto\">According to a statement issued on Sunday in Abuja by the minister\u2019s Special Adviser on Media, Mr Ifedayo Sayo, Leonard said that Nigeria became eligible after a review of the criteria set by the US Congress under AGOA.<\/div>\n<div dir=\"auto\"><\/div>\n<div dir=\"auto\">She said that the criteria for eligibility among other things included the establishment of a market-based economy, rule of law, political pluralism, right to due process, fair trial and equal protection under the law.<\/div>\n<div dir=\"auto\"><\/div>\n<div dir=\"auto\">\u201cOthers are elimination of barriers to U.S. trade and investment, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/broadnews\/2022\/05\/24\/ipas-ncws-partner-to-remove-economic-health-barriers-against-women\/\">economic<\/a> policies to reduce poverty, a system to combat corruption and bribery, and protection of internationally recognised workers rights,\u201d she said.<\/div>\n<div dir=\"auto\"><\/div>\n<div dir=\"auto\">Leonard emphasised that AGOA criteria also required the benefitting country to respect internationally recognised human rights.<\/div>\n<div dir=\"auto\"><\/div>\n<div dir=\"auto\">According to her, during the AGOA eligibility review, the U.S. government noted the progress Nigeria made to diversify and strengthen the market-based economy.<\/div>\n<div dir=\"auto\"><\/div>\n<div dir=\"auto\">\n<div dir=\"auto\">The U.S. ambassador, however, expressed U.S. government\u2019s concern on the availability and accessibility of U.S. firms to forex.<\/div>\n<div dir=\"auto\"><\/div>\n<div dir=\"auto\">\u201cThis is particularly the ability to repatriate revenue and fulfil loan obligations in timely manner, child labour and respect for the rule of law,\u201d she said.<\/div>\n<div dir=\"auto\"><\/div>\n<div dir=\"auto\">In his response, Adebayo expressed happiness with the U.S.\u00a0 government\u2019s report which allowed Nigeria to continue to enjoy preferential trade access to the U.S. market.<\/div>\n<div dir=\"auto\"><\/div>\n<div dir=\"auto\">The minister said that the report was an affirmation of the progress the country was making to reposition the economy for better<\/div>\n<div dir=\"auto\">performance.<\/div>\n<div dir=\"auto\"><\/div>\n<div dir=\"auto\">He explained that the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/broadnews\/2021\/12\/21\/end-killings-in-northwest-plateau-women-call-on-federal-government\/\">Federal Government<\/a> had established the Presidential Enabling Business Environment Council (PEBEC) to improve the business environment.<\/div>\n<div dir=\"auto\"><\/div>\n<div dir=\"auto\">He assured that the government would continue to deepen trade relations between the two countries.<\/div>\n<div dir=\"auto\"><\/div>\n<div dir=\"auto\">Adebayo promised to convey the concerns of the U.S. government to the affected agencies of government.<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>\u00a0The U.S. Ambassador to Nigeria, Mary Leonard, says Nigeria will continue to be eligible for preferential trade access to U.S. market under the African Growth and Opportunity Act (AGOA).
