{"id":28371,"date":"2022-06-06T15:44:51","date_gmt":"2022-06-06T15:44:51","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/broadnews\/?p=28371"},"modified":"2022-06-06T15:44:51","modified_gmt":"2022-06-06T15:44:51","slug":"invest-more-in-children-health-centres-expert-tasks-fg","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/broadnews\/2022\/06\/06\/invest-more-in-children-health-centres-expert-tasks-fg\/","title":{"rendered":"Invest more in children health centres &#8211; Expert tasks FG"},"content":{"rendered":"<header class=\"entry-header\" aria-label=\"Content\">\n<p class=\"entry-title\">Prof. Mark Davenport, a past President of the British Association of Pediatric Surgeons, has appealed to the Federal Government to invest more in the Children\u2019s Health Centres (CHC), across the country.<\/p>\n<\/header>\n<div class=\"entry-content\">\n<p>Davenport made the call on Monday in Ilorin, at a workshop co-organised by the Divisions of Pediatric Surgery of the University of Ilorin and the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/broadnews\/2022\/06\/02\/fg-converts-fmc-katsina-to-teaching-hospital-cmd\/\"><strong>University of Ilorin Teaching Hospital (UITH).<\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The workshop was organised in collaboration with the National Hospital, Abuja and the Kings Hospital, London.<\/p>\n<p>The expert said, \u201dinvesting in children health centres would be very important to the country\u2019s health circumstances.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Speaking at the workshop with a theme: \u201cPediatric Hepato-pancreato biliary Surgical Workshop\u201d, Davenport urged the government to develop more expertise in the field of liver diseases in children.<\/p>\n<p>He explained that Hepato-pancreato-biliary (HPB)surgery consists of the general surgical treatment for benign and malignant diseases of the liver, pancreas, gallbladder, and bile ducts.<\/p>\n<p>According to him, such investment will save the country from total collapse, saying that the aim of the workshop is to help the participants to improve their skills in the area of child surgery.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe organised educational lectures prior to the surgery, we planned to do a surgery on a live child and it was filmed and broadcast as a zoom meeting,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>He decried the general lack of intensive care of children in the country\u2019s hospitals, adding, \u201dsteps are now being taken to improve it in some quarters.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>In his presentation, Prof. Lukman Abdur-Rahman, a Lecturer at the Department of Surgery of the University observed, \u201dmany children have jaundice and many more with surgical jaundice turn out late for treatment.<\/p>\n<p>\u201dOne of the aims of the workshop is to create awareness for the people on how to detect the ailment early and treat it promptly.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Abdur-rahman, also a Consultant Pediatrics Surgeon at UITH decried the lack of sufficient facilities and pediatric intensive care in the units.<\/p>\n<p>He said, \u201d\u2019more than 70 per cent of the cases of jaundice can medically be treated,\u201d adding, however, \u201cIf the medical causes are not addressed properly, jaundice can cause neurological incapacitation and liver failure\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>The Pediatric Surgeon, therefore, implored the government to provide more facilities to be able to conduct child surgery successfully.<\/p>\n<p>Also, Dr Olumide Elebute, a Consultant Pediatric Surgeon at the Lagos University Teaching Hospital (LUTH), Idi-Araba, advised Nigerians to always take precautions and medical advice.<\/p>\n<p>He said, \u201din a situation whereby jaundice extends to two weeks, one should seek medical attention and should not be taken for granted\u201d.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Prof. Mark Davenport, a past President of the British Association of Pediatric Surgeons, has appealed to the Federal Government to invest more in the Children\u2019s Health Centres (CHC), across the country.
