{"id":28546,"date":"2022-06-07T11:57:26","date_gmt":"2022-06-07T11:57:26","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/broadnews\/?p=28546"},"modified":"2022-06-07T11:57:26","modified_gmt":"2022-06-07T11:57:26","slug":"cabinet-to-meet-as-johnson-attempts-to-move-on-from-confidence-vote","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/broadnews\/2022\/06\/07\/cabinet-to-meet-as-johnson-attempts-to-move-on-from-confidence-vote\/","title":{"rendered":"Cabinet to meet as Johnson attempts to move on from confidence vote"},"content":{"rendered":"<header class=\"entry-header\" aria-label=\"Content\">\n<h1 class=\"entry-title\"><span style=\"font-size: 16px\">\u00a0British Prime Minister Boris Johnson is set to meet his Cabinet on Tuesday as he seeks to keep his premiership afloat by putting a bruising confidence ballot firmly behind him.<\/span><\/h1>\n<\/header>\n<div class=\"entry-content\">\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/broadnews\/2022\/03\/02\/german-chancellor-to-meet-israel-prime-minister-as-ukraine-crisis-deepens\/\">prime minister<\/a> insisted he had secured a decisive victory in spite of 148 of his own MPs voting to oust him on Monday night.<\/p>\n<p>He argued that the government could now move on and focus on what really mattered to people.<\/p>\n<p>He also poured cold water on the prospect of a snap election, saying he was certainly not interested in the idea.<\/p>\n<p>But while Johnson\u2019s allies have insisted his ballot victory should draw a line under the question of his leadership,\u00a0opposition Labour Party is moving to apply further pressure on the PM by pushing a commons vote on standards.<\/p>\n<p>The party was urging MPs from all sides to back calls for Johnson\u2019s ethics adviser to be given the freedom to launch his own <a href=\"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/broadnews\/2022\/05\/12\/sri-lankan-court-issues-travel-ban-on-former-prime-minister-others\/\">investigations<\/a> into potential ministerial rule breaches.<\/p>\n<p>Conservative MPs voted by 211 to 148 in support of the prime minister on Monday, but the scale of the revolt against his leadership left him wounded.<\/p>\n<p>When Theresa May faced a confidence vote in 2018 she secured the support of 63 per cent of her MPs but was still forced out within six months.<\/p>\n<p>Mr Johnson saw 41 per cent of his MPs vote against him, a worse result than Mrs May.<\/p>\n<p>But the Prime Minister told reporters in Downing Street: \u201cI think it\u2019s an extremely good, positive, conclusive, decisive result which enables us to move on, to unite and to focus on delivery and that is exactly what we are going to do.\u2019\u2019<\/p>\n<p>Johnson rejected the assertion that he was now a lame-duck prime minister who needed to call a snap election to secure a new mandate from the public, insisting he was focused on people\u2019s priorities.<\/p>\n<p>Several ministers flocked to back the PM following the result, with Foreign Secretary Liz Truss and Levelling Up Secretary Michael Gove tweeting their support.<\/p>\n<p>Chancellor Rishi Sunak said it was time to move forward after the prime minister\u2019s victory.<\/p>\n<p>Health Secretary Sajid Javid said Johnson had secured a fresh mandate from the Conservative Party.<\/p>\n<p>Northern Ireland Secretary Brandon Lewis also said Tory MPs must unite behind the PM and focus on making people\u2019s lives better.<\/p>\n<p>But others were not entirely positive, with Environment Secretary George Eustice saying it was \u201calways disappointing\u2019\u2019 when there is a significant minority of your own party voting in such a way.<\/p>\n<p>Mr Eustice told the PA news agency that the result underlined that as a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/broadnews\/2022\/06\/04\/child-labour-proprietor-tasks-government-to-provide-free-education\/\">Government<\/a> we have got to work very hard to reconnect with our own parliamentary party.<\/p>\n<p>This would help to reunite them behind the agenda we were all elected to deliver.<\/p>\n<p>Blackpool MP Scott Benton, who voted in favour of Mr Johnson said, he could acknowledge the outcome was not good for the Prime Minister, and he would have preferred a bigger majority.<\/p>\n<p>Speaking to Sky News in Westminster\u2019s central lobby, Mr Benton said his constituents don\u2019t care about the title tattle in Westminster.<\/p>\n<p>But asked if he could acknowledge that it was not a good result for Mr Johnson, he said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo, I can acknowledge it.\u2019\u2019<\/p>\n<p>2Of course I support Boris Johnson. Would I have liked the majority to be higher for him this evening? Of course, I would.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBut as a Conservative Party we do one thing very well, and that\u2019s uniting and fighting the opposition.\u2019\u2019<\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile, Labour leader Sir Keir Starmer said Mr Johnson was utterly unfit for the great office he held.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cConservative MPs made their choice,\u2019\u2019 he said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThey have ignored the British public and hitched themselves and their party firmly to Boris Johnson and all he represents.\u2019\u2019<\/p>\n<p>The scale of the revolt against Mr Johnson\u2019s leadership has left him vulnerable, and he could suffer further blows in two key by-elections in Wakefield and Tiverton and Honiton on June 23.<\/p>\n<p>But he was bullish on Monday night as he told reporters that he had secured a \u201cvery good result for politics and for the country.\u2019\u2019<\/p>\n<p>In its motion, to be tabled in the Commons on Tuesday, Labour would ask all MPs to vote to adopt a package of recommendations put forward by the Committee on Standards in Public Life in a report last year.<\/p>\n<p>These include a call for Mr Johnson\u2019s ethics adviser to be able to initiate investigations into breaches of the ministerial code.2<\/p>\n<p>The Prime Minister previously said he was putting in place an enhanced process for his independent adviser on the code.<\/p>\n<p>Lord Geidt, to initiate his own investigations into possible breaches, but that he would still need Mr Johnson\u2019s consent before proceeding.<\/p>\n<p>The chairman of the standards watchdog, Lord Evans of Weardale, said the change, while an improvement on the previous position, meant the adviser was still not sufficiently independent.<\/p>\n<p>Angela Rayner, Labour\u2019s deputy leader, said: \u201cLabour is urging MPs of all parties to support this independent, cross-party package of reforms to tackle decaying standards.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf they fail to back this move to clean up politics, it is they who will have to look their constituents in the eye.\u2019\u2019<\/p>\n<p>Former Conservative leader William Hague said Mr Johnson has experienced a greater level of rejection than any of his predecessors and should quit the premiership.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWords have been said that cannot be retracted, reports published that cannot be erased, and votes have been cast that show a greater level of rejection than any Tory leader has ever endured and survived.\u2019\u2019<\/p>\n<p>Lord Hague wrote in The Times.<\/p>\n<p>The article was shared by Tory MP Andrew Bridgen, who said: \u201cLord Hague is right.
