{"id":28974,"date":"2022-06-09T21:09:35","date_gmt":"2022-06-09T21:09:35","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/broadnews\/?p=28974"},"modified":"2022-06-09T21:09:35","modified_gmt":"2022-06-09T21:09:35","slug":"money-paid-to-platini-was-late-payment-of-wages-blatter-tells-court","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/broadnews\/2022\/06\/09\/money-paid-to-platini-was-late-payment-of-wages-blatter-tells-court\/","title":{"rendered":"Money paid to Platini was late payment of wages, Blatter tells court"},"content":{"rendered":"<header class=\"entry-header\" aria-label=\"Content\">\n<p class=\"entry-title\"><span style=\"font-size: 16px\">Former FIFA president Joseph Blatter has denied any wrongdoing as he faces a trial for fraud in Switzerland alongside Michel Platini, complaining about being pre-judged in the media.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/header>\n<div class=\"entry-content\">\n<div class=\"detailtext lang-en\" lang=\"en\">\n<p>It was \u201ctotally incomprehensible\u201d for him that they were in court, Blatter said on Thursday at the Swiss Federal Criminal Court in Bellinzona.<\/p>\n<p>He said the payment of two million Swiss francs (2.07 million dollars) to former UEFA president Platini had gone through all due process at the world football governing body.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt is an owed, late payment of wages,\u201d Blatter said. \u201cIt\u2019s an administrative matter in an association and it will be dealt with according to civil law.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Being questioned by a prosecutor in 2015 over allegations of fraud was something that caught him by surprise. \u201cThis shock has lasted seven years now, (and) this shock is still there,\u201d Blatter said.<\/p>\n<p>He said he had already faced the \u201cmaximum penalty\u201d at the time, being \u201costracised\u201d in the world. \u201cThe media gave me a criminal record,\u201d Blatter added.<\/p>\n<p>The pair are charged with defrauding <a href=\"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/broadnews\/2022\/06\/01\/fifa-world-cup-qatar-enforces-summertime-ban-on-outdoor-labour\/\">FIFA<\/a> over the payment Platini received for work done as an advisor between 1998 and 2002, among other offences.<\/p>\n<p>After his election as FIFA boss in 1998, he had agreed to cooperate with Platini, Blatter said.<\/p>\n<p>The latter had told him: \u201cI am worth a million.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>In August 1999, a contract backdated to the beginning of the year was agreed with a salary of 300,000 Swiss francs.<\/p>\n<p>When Platini pointed out that this was not the full amount agreed, Blatter said, \u201cWe\u2019ll see about that later.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>In 2011, the sum of two million Swiss francs was invoiced by Platini, who is also scheduled to be questioned on Thursday before the first witnesses are also heard.<\/p>\n<p>Blatter, 86, was originally scheduled to be questioned on Wednesday\u2019s opening day of the trial but this was delayed due to his feeling unwell.<\/p>\n<p>Both men protested their innocence ahead of the trial over 11 days to June 22, with a verdict to follow on July 8<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Former FIFA president Joseph Blatter has denied any wrongdoing as he faces a trial for fraud in Switzerland alongside Michel Platini, complaining about being pre-judged in the media.
