{"id":30479,"date":"2022-06-18T13:41:48","date_gmt":"2022-06-18T13:41:48","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/broadnews\/?p=30479"},"modified":"2022-06-18T13:41:48","modified_gmt":"2022-06-18T13:41:48","slug":"who-says-nearly-one-billion-people-have-mental-disorder","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/broadnews\/2022\/06\/18\/who-says-nearly-one-billion-people-have-mental-disorder\/","title":{"rendered":"WHO says nearly one billion people have mental disorder"},"content":{"rendered":"<header class=\"entry-header\" aria-label=\"Content\">\n<p class=\"entry-title\"><span style=\"font-size: 16px\">The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/broadnews\/2022\/05\/18\/world-hypertension-day-2022-dietician-highlights-foods-helpful-for-hypertensive-patients\/\">World Health Organisation (WHO)<\/a> says that nearly one billion people worldwide suffer from some form of mental disorder, according to the latest UN data.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/header>\n<div class=\"entry-content\">\n<p>The data released on Friday said the staggering figure was even more worrying because it included around one in seven teenagers.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTo make matters worse, in the first year of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/broadnews\/2022\/05\/31\/childrens-survival-right-most-important-during-covid-19-pandemic-cambodia-pm\/\">COVID-19 pandemic<\/a>, rates of common conditions such as depression and anxiety went up by more than 25 percent,\u2019\u2019 it said.<\/p>\n<p>It said in its largest review of mental health since the turn of the century, that WHO had urged more countries to get to grips with worsening conditions.<\/p>\n<p>According to the data, social and economic inequalities, public health emergencies, war, and the climate crisis are among the global, structural threats to mental health.<\/p>\n<p>It said that depression and anxiety went up by more than 25 percent in the first year of the pandemic alone.<\/p>\n<p>It offered examples of good practices that should be implemented as quickly as possible in recognition of the important role that mental health played in positive and sustainable development.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEveryone\u2019s life touches someone with a mental health condition. Good mental health translates to good physical health and this new report makes a compelling case for change.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe inextricable links between mental health and public health, human rights, and socio-economic development mean that transforming policy and practice in mental health can deliver real, substantive benefits for individuals, communities, and countries.<\/p>\n<p>\u201c Investment into mental health is an investment into a better life and future for all,\u2019\u2019 WHO Director-General, Tedros Ghebreyesus said<\/p>\n<p>Ghebreyesus said that even before COVID-19 hit, only a small fraction of people in need of help had access to effective, affordable, and quality mental health treatment, citing the latest available global data from 2019.<\/p>\n<p>He said, for instance, more than 70 percent of those suffering from psychosis worldwide did not get the help they needed.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe gap between rich and poor nations highlights unequal access to healthcare, as seven in 10 people with psychosis receive treatment in high-income countries, compared to only 12 percent in low-income countries,\u2019\u2019 Ghebreyesus said.<\/p>\n<p>According to him, the situation is more dramatic for cases of depression, pointing to gaps in assistance across all countries including high-income ones.<\/p>\n<p>\u201c Only one-third of people who suffer from depression receive formal mental health care.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAlthough high-income countries offer \u2018minimally-adequate\u2019 treatment for depression in 23 percent of cases, this drops to just three percent in low and lower middle-income countries,\u2019\u2019 he said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe need to transform our attitudes, actions, and approaches to promote and protect mental health, and to provide and care for those in need.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe can and should do this by transforming the environments that influence our mental health and by developing community-based mental health services capable of achieving universal health coverage for mental health,\u2019\u2019 he said.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The World Health Organisation (WHO) says that nearly one billion people worldwide suffer from some form of mental disorder, according to the latest UN data.
