{"id":31164,"date":"2022-06-22T09:49:31","date_gmt":"2022-06-22T09:49:31","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/broadnews\/?p=31164"},"modified":"2022-06-22T09:49:31","modified_gmt":"2022-06-22T09:49:31","slug":"invest-in-4000-km-nigeria-morocco-gas-pipeline-buhari-urges-uk-eu-countries","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/broadnews\/2022\/06\/22\/invest-in-4000-km-nigeria-morocco-gas-pipeline-buhari-urges-uk-eu-countries\/","title":{"rendered":"Invest in 4000 km Nigeria-Morocco gas pipeline &#8211; Buhari urges UK, EU countries"},"content":{"rendered":"<header class=\"entry-header\" aria-label=\"Content\">\n<p class=\"entry-title\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/broadnews\/2022\/06\/18\/buhari-sets-up-national-early-warning-centre-in-vps-office\/\"><strong>President Muhammadu Buhari<\/strong><\/a> has stressed the need for a long-term partnership between Nigeria and the UK as well as the European Union on green energy policy.<\/p>\n<\/header>\n<div class=\"entry-content\">\n<p>The president, who made the call in an interview session with Bloomberg News, said the UK and EU countries should invest in the planned 4000 km pipeline meant to bring Nigerian gas \u2013 the largest reserves in Africa \u2013 via Morocco, then onto Europe.<\/p>\n<p>He expressed the hope that the gas pipeline project, when completed would help to address gas supply crisis in Europe.<\/p>\n<p>He said: \u201dWe need long term partnership not inconsistency and contradiction on green energy policy from the UK and European Union.<\/p>\n<p>\u201dInvestment is hampered by their broad-brush moratorium on overseas gas projects, while at home the same projects are classified as green.<\/p>\n<p>\u201dIt does not help their energy security, it does not help Nigeria\u2019s economy, and it does not help the environment. It is a hypocrisy that must end.<\/p>\n<p>\u201dTo change, the UK and EU countries should invest in our planned 4000 km pipeline to bring Nigerian gas \u2013 the largest reserves in Africa \u2013 via Morocco, then onto Europe.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He further explained that the gas pipeline project, connecting Nigeria to Europe which was conceived four years ago, had since been unveiled.<\/p>\n<p>\u201dLast week (June 2) \u2013 in record time \u2013 the Nigerian National Petroleum Company (NNPC) entered into an agreement with the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/broadnews\/2022\/06\/15\/ecowas-winning-the-fight-against-maritime-insecurity-brou\/\"><strong>Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS)<\/strong><\/a> for its construction.<\/p>\n<p>\u201dConcurrently on July 1, the NNPC will become a Limited Liability Company and be subject to more robust auditing and commercial disclosure obligations.<\/p>\n<p>\u201dIt will help stimulate investment and boost transparency, where corruption has deterred the former and stymied the latter.<\/p>\n<p>\u201dMy administration is the first to pass this landmark reform in our oil and gas sector, after two decades of predecessors\u2019 failure to do so \u2013 no doubt due to vested interests,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>Buhari, however, noted that criminality and terrorism in Nigeria\u2019s oil-producing regions had continued to hamper oil production.<\/p>\n<p>He, therefore, called on the Western allies to sanction all terrorist groups operating in the Niger Delta region and other oil producing states in the South-East and South South zones.<\/p>\n<p>\u201dIt would help if our western allies designated IPOB as a terrorist group, given their complicity in damage to pipelines and infrastructure,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>The president revealed that the country had invested in the security forces, including the one billion dollars military deal with the U.S. for the acquisition of A-29 Super Tucano aircraft.<\/p>\n<p>\u201dThese efforts are making an impact: wells that had to be closed due to criminality have now re-opened.<\/p>\n<p>\u201dWith these efforts, OPEC has raised our quota for next month,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n<p>On the call for the removal of the CBN Governor, Godwin Emefiele, for showing interest to contest for the office of the President, the president said it was the responsibility of the CBN\u2019s board of directors to determine whether a CBN governor\u2019s actions had fallen foul of the laws.<\/p>\n<p>\u2018 \u2018The CBN governor is appointed by the President.<\/p>\n<p>\u201dBut this appointment is subject to confirmation by the Nigerian Senate. Ultimately, it will be for the CBN\u2019s board of directors to determine whether a CBN governor\u2019s actions have fallen foul of the laws in place to ensure he can most effectively carry out his duties.<\/p>\n<p>\u201dBut there is a subtext to the accusations. Because the governor follows a model outside of the economic orthodoxy, he is labelled political. But the orthodoxy has proved wrong time and again.<\/p>\n<p>\u2018 \u2018Instead, the governor is following an alternative economic model that puts people at the heart of policy.<\/p>\n<p>\u201dNigeria should be free to choose its development model and how to construct our economy, so it functions for Nigerians.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>On whether the president plans to endorse a candidate for president in 2023 general elections, Buhari simply said: \u201dYes.
