{"id":31497,"date":"2022-06-23T19:02:12","date_gmt":"2022-06-23T19:02:12","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/broadnews\/?p=31497"},"modified":"2022-06-23T19:02:12","modified_gmt":"2022-06-23T19:02:12","slug":"osun-2022-ngo-sensitises-students-with-disabilities-on-right-to-vote","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/broadnews\/2022\/06\/23\/osun-2022-ngo-sensitises-students-with-disabilities-on-right-to-vote\/","title":{"rendered":"Osun 2022: NGO sensitises students with disabilities on\u00a0\u201cright to vote"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>A Non-Governmental Organisation, Access Nigeria Campaign, on Thursday sensitised students living with disabilities in Osun, on their rights to vote during the July 16 gubernatorial election in the state.<\/p>\n<p>Reports\u00a0 have it\u00a0 that the sensitisation was held at <a href=\"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/broadnews\/2022\/06\/23\/foundation-begins-soft-skills-training-for-9-secondary-schools-in-lagos-community\/\">Secondary School<\/a> for People with Special Needs in Osogbo.<\/p>\n<p>In his remarks, Mr Oluwaseyi Moses, the Programme Manager of the organisation, said the programme was to educate students, who were of voting age to know about their civic responsibility and the procedures to follow during the election.<\/p>\n<p>Moses said that understanding the election procedures would assist the students to vote without any form of difficulty.<\/p>\n<p>He said the sensitisation was also aimed at reducing voters\u2019 apathy among the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/broadnews\/2022\/06\/20\/lawmaker-pays-neco-exam-fees-for-2496-students-in-kano-state\/\">students<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Moses\u00a0said the students were taught in the various provisions that had been made for them by the Independent Electoral Commission (INEC) as well as in the new electoral act.<\/p>\n<p>Moses said that over the years, the community of Persons with Disabilities had been disenfranchised from the electoral process.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAccess Nigeria Campaign is all about creating accessibility for persons with disabilities, especially in political and election process.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd that is why we are in this school with our programme called \u201cGOTV\u201d, Get Out The Vote from people with disabilities.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe have realised that concentration is not on these students with disabilities, who are of voting age and the reason we are here to teach them various provisions that will make voting easy for them on the election day.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe are not here\u00a0to teach them the party to vote for, but rather to educate them on\u00a0their civic rights and the assistive\u00a0provision available for them on the election day,\u2019\u2019 he said.<\/p>\n<p>Moses said that the students were taught on Braille ballot guide for the blind, form EC30E, which is pictorial to enable the deaf to vote independently and form EC40H for disaggregated manner of type of disabilities.<\/p>\n<p>He appealed to parents of the students to allow them to vote, adding that they are the future leaders.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>A Non-Governmental Organisation, Access Nigeria Campaign, on Thursday sensitised students living with disabilities in Osun, on their rights to vote during the July 16 gubernatorial election in the state.
