{"id":31596,"date":"2022-06-24T10:05:06","date_gmt":"2022-06-24T10:05:06","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/broadnews\/?p=31596"},"modified":"2022-06-24T10:06:27","modified_gmt":"2022-06-24T10:06:27","slug":"31596","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/broadnews\/2022\/06\/24\/31596\/","title":{"rendered":"WHO confirms 3,200 cases of monkeypox in 48 countries including Nigeria"},"content":{"rendered":"<header class=\"entry-header\" aria-label=\"Content\"><\/header>\n<div class=\"entry-content\">\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/broadnews\/2022\/06\/18\/who-says-nearly-one-billion-people-have-mental-disorder\/\">WHO<\/a> says Nigeria is one of the countries that have reported cases of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/broadnews\/2022\/06\/15\/who-to-rename-monkeypox-publishes-guideline-on-vaccination\/\">monkeypox.<\/a><\/p>\n<p>It says more than 3,200 cases have been confirmed in 48 countries and in five of its regions globally.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIn Nigeria, the proportion of women affected is much higher than elsewhere.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt is critical to better understand how the disease is spreading there,\u2019\u2019 WHO\u2019s Director-General, Tedros Ghebreyesus, has said.<\/p>\n<p>He made the declarations at the first meeting of the WHO\u2019s Emergency Committee on the monkeypox outbreak on Thursday.<\/p>\n<p>Ghebreyesus said the outbreak in newly-affected countries continued to be primarily among gay men and men who reported recent sexual encounters with new or multiple partners.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPerson-to-person transmission is ongoing and is likely underestimated,\u2019\u2019 he stressed.<\/p>\n<p>He said so far in 2022, almost 1,500 suspected cases of monkeypox and around 70 deaths had been reported in Central Africa.<\/p>\n<p>He added that the cases in Africa were primarily in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC), but also in the Central African Republic and Cameroon.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFew of these cases are confirmed, and little is known about their circumstances. While the epidemiology and viral clade in these cases may be different, it is a situation that cannot be ignored,\u2019\u2019 he said.<\/p>\n<p>Ghebreyesus said in some outbreaks, \u201cwe have sometimes seen the consequences of countries not being transparent, of not sharing information.\u2019\u2019<\/p>\n<p>The WHO chief called for case finding, contact tracing, laboratory investigation, genome sequencing, and implementation of infection prevention and control measures.<\/p>\n<p>WHO also needs clear case definitions to help to identify and report infections, he said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAll countries have to remain vigilant and strengthen their capacities to prevent onward transmission of monkeypox.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt is likely that many countries will have missed opportunities to identify cases, including cases in the community without any recent travel,\u2019\u2019 he said.<\/p>\n<p>WHO\u2019s goal is to support countries to contain transmission and stop the outbreak with established public health tools including surveillance, contact-tracing, and isolation of infected patients.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe have learned a great deal from recent outbreaks including COVID-19 and the global HIV epidemic,\u2019\u2019 Ghebreyesus told assembled scientists.<\/p>\n<p>He said one of the most important things was to work closely with affected communities to co-create effective risk communications, noting that that was what WHO was doing.<\/p>\n<p>Ghebreyesus said it was vital to address stigma, discrimination, and misinformation, in the monkeypox and other outbreaks, swiftly and decisively.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe also need to work together as an international community to generate the necessary clinical efficacy and safety data on vaccines and therapeutics against monkeypox and ensure their equitable distribution,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>The first mysterious cluster of monkeypox appeared in the United Kingdom more than six weeks ago when the WHO was told of a family cluster of three cases without any recent travel history.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The WHO says Nigeria is one of the countries that have reported cases of monkeypox.
