{"id":32405,"date":"2022-06-29T19:32:45","date_gmt":"2022-06-29T19:32:45","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/broadnews\/?p=32405"},"modified":"2022-06-29T19:32:45","modified_gmt":"2022-06-29T19:32:45","slug":"covid-19-drives-increase-in-digital-payments-globally-world-bank","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/broadnews\/2022\/06\/29\/covid-19-drives-increase-in-digital-payments-globally-world-bank\/","title":{"rendered":"COVID-19 drives increase in digital payments globally \u2013 World Bank"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/broadnews\/2022\/06\/23\/world-bank-approves-143m-for-drought-response-in-somalia\/\">The World Bank<\/a> says the COVID-19 pandemic encouraged financial inclusion, leading to increase in digital payments.<\/p>\n<p>This, it stated, was amid global expansion of formal financial services.<\/p>\n<p>It stated in its latest Global Findex 2021 database released on Wednesday that the expansion created new economic opportunities and narrowed the gender gap in accounts ownership.<\/p>\n<p>It also built resilience at the household level to better manage financial shocks<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIn low and middle-income economies (excluding China), more than 40 per cent of adults who made in-store or online payments using a card, phone, or the internet did so for the first time.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe same was true for more than a third of adults in all low and middle-income economies who paid utility bills directly from a formal account,\u2019\u2019 it stated.<\/p>\n<p>The report showed that in India, more than 80 million adults made their first digital merchant payment after the start of the pandemic, while in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/broadnews\/2022\/06\/09\/china-releases-new-geologic-map-of-moon\/\">China<\/a> more than 100 million adults did.<\/p>\n<p>It added that two-thirds of adults worldwide now make or receive digital payments, with the share in developing economies growing from 35 per cent in 2014 to 57 per cent in 2021.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIn developing economies, 71 per cent of people have accounts in banks or in other financial institutions or with a mobile money provider, up from 63 per cent in 2017 and 42 per cent in 201,\u2019\u2019 it added.<\/p>\n<p>The report said that mobile money accounts drove a huge increase in financial inclusion in Sub-Sahara Africa.<\/p>\n<p>The World Bank Group\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/broadnews\/2022\/06\/25\/dnf-campaign-organisation-salutes-apc-youngest-presidential-aspirant-at-41\/\">President<\/a>, David Malpass, said the digital revolution also catalysed increases in access and use of financial services across the world.<\/p>\n<p>Malpass said this transformed how people made and received payments, borrowed and saved.<\/p>\n<p>He said some of the policy priorities to mitigate reversals in development from the on-going overlapping crises included creating an enabling environment and promoting the digitisation of payments.<\/p>\n<p>Malpass listed others as increased broadening of access to formal accounts and financial services among women and the poor.<\/p>\n<p>The Global Findex database is the World Bank\u2019s most comprehensive data set on how adults save, borrow, make payments, and manage risks.<\/p>\n<p>It was launched in 2011 with funding from the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation.
