Diplomatic ties were reestablished between China and Nicaragua on Friday after the Central American country broke relations with Chinese-claimed Taiwan.<\/p>\n

The move gave Beijing a boost in a part of the world long considered the United States\u2019 backyard and angering Washington.<\/p>\n

China has increased military and political pressure on Taiwan to accept its sovereignty claims, drawing anger from the democratically ruled island, which has repeatedly said it would not be bullied and has the right to international participation.<\/p>\n

Announcing the decision, China\u2019s Foreign Ministry, after meetings with Nicaragua\u2019s finance minister and two of President Daniel Ortega\u2019s sons in the northern Chinese city of Tianjin, said the country had made the \u201ccorrect choice\u201d.<\/p>\n

The break with Taiwan shrinks the island\u2019s dwindling pool of international allies and is a blow to the U.S.<\/p>\n

It follows months of worsening ties between Ortega and Washington and came on the day the U.S. State Department said it had applied sanctions on Nestor Moncada Lau, a national security adviser to Ortega.<\/p>\n

The U.S. is alleging Lau operates an import and customs fraud scheme to enrich members of Ortega\u2019s government.<\/p>\n

The U.S. State Department<\/a> said Nicaragua\u2019s decision did not reflect the will of the Nicaraguan people because its government was not freely elected.<\/p>\n

Spokesperson, Ned Price said in a statement, \u201cWe do know, however, that this deprives Nicaragua\u2019s people of a steadfast partner in its democratic and economic growth.\u2019\u2019<\/p>\n

\u201cWe encourage all countries that value democratic institutions, transparency, the rule of law and promoting economic prosperity for their citizens to expand engagement with Taiwan.\u2019\u2019<\/p>\n

Chinese Foreign Minister, Wang Yi, said Taiwan\u2019s allies \u2013 now only 14 countries \u2013 have stayed with Taipei only because of pressure from the U.S. and Taiwan\u2019s \u201cdollar diplomacy\u201d, accusations Taipei denies.<\/p>\n

Nicaragua\u2019s congress in 2019 accepted a $100 million loan from Taiwan, but Taiwan\u2019s Foreign Ministry said on Friday that the money, designed for economic reconstruction, has never been paid because of \u201cprocedural issues with allocation requirements by the bank\u2019\u2019, which it did not name.<\/p>\n

China\u2019s Foreign Ministry, asked if China would give financial aid to Nicaragua, said the resumption in ties was a \u201cpolitical decision, definitely not a bargaining chip\u2019\u2019.<\/p>\n

Taiwan\u2019s government said it was unbowed by Nicaragua\u2019s decision.<\/p>\n

Taiwan President Tsai Ing-wen said the island would not bend to pressure or change the determination to uphold democracy and freedom and \u201cmatch towards the world\u2019\u2019.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe more successful Taiwan\u2019s democracy is, the stronger the international support and the greater the pressure from the authoritarian camp,\u2019\u2019 she said in Taipei.<\/p>\n

A senior Taiwan official familiar with the matter told Reuters the timing was \u201cprovocative\u201d, coming during the Biden administration\u2019s Summit for Democracy, which Taiwan is attending, and a week before four referendums on the island, though they are on domestic issues like energy and pork imports.<\/p>\n

At the now-defunct Nicaraguan embassy in Taipei, in a building in the leafy suburb of Tianmu, staff said the former ambassador was not in.<\/p>\n

Nicaragua\u2019s flag outside had been removed by the time a Reuters reporter arrived mid-morning.<\/p>\n

Ortega first cut ties with Taiwan in 1985, but they were re-established with the island in 1990 under then-Nicaraguan President Violeta Barrios de Chamorro.<\/p>\n

One Taiwan-based diplomatic source, familiar with the region, said the move was not a surprise given Washington\u2019s lack of leverage with Ortega due to the sanctions, and that looking to China for aid and support was a natural course of action.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt appears that Ortega had had enough,\u2019\u2019 the source told Reuters, speaking on condition of anonymity.<\/p>\n

Attention will now turn to another Taiwan friend, Honduras.<\/p>\n

Aides for the incoming president Xiomara Castro have said she would not establish ties with China, backtracking from Castro\u2019\u2019s earlier comments that she was open to starting formal relations with Beijing.<\/p>\n

A second Taiwan-based diplomatic source told Reuters it was still a case of \u201cwatch this space\u201d whether Honduras would ultimately go with Beijing.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
