Star Plus FC of Ngwo Thursday qualified for the quarterfinals of the ongoing Enugu State Football League.<\/p>\n

The team trounced De-Lawmaco of Independence Layout 4-0 at the Rangers International FC training pitch<\/a>, Liberty Estate, Enugu.<\/p>\n

Reports have it that Star Plus, an Ngwo-based clubside, are the defending 2021 league Champions.<\/p>\n

They defeated Chuson FC of Emene 2-1 at the 2021 final to emerge champions.<\/p>\n

The club garnered six points after winning two matches in group D, which had four teams.<\/p>\n

Chidera Pius opened scoring at the 35th minute before Chukwujekwu Okpali made it 2-0 at the 38th minute.
\nOkpali hit a brace at the 43rd minute to raise the scores to 3-0.<\/p>\n

Pius also pulled a brace and his third goal of the league at the 79th minute to bring the scores to 4-0 .<\/p>\n

In another encounter, Flying Angels played out 1-1 with Strikers FC of Abakpa.
\nBoth sides scored their goals after the interval.<\/p>\n

Uzochukwu Ogbabido scored for Flying Angels and Moses Ugwuokwor levelled scores at the 90th minute of play.<\/p>\n

Meanwhile, Giant Brillars FC of New Layout defeated Great Achievers FC of Emene 1-0 at the final match of the day.<\/p>\n

The team defended the lone goal, which was scored by Chimezie Uba at the 10th minute, by frustrating all the efforts of the hard fighting Great Achievers.<\/p>\n

Our correspondent reports that the league, which kicked off on June 26, is scheduled to end on July 26.<\/p>\n

In other news, Super Falcons<\/a>\u2019 winger Francisca Ordega says the team\u2019s victory over Botswana is the beginning of better things to come for Nigeria at the ongoing 2022 Women\u2019s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) in Morocco.<\/p>\n

Reports have it that Cup holders Super Falcons got their 12th Women Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) campaign back on track with a 2-0 win over Botswana in Rabat on Thursday.<\/p>\n

The result meant the Super Falcons earned their first three points of the tournament and leaped to the second spot on the Group C four-team table behind table-toppers South Africa.<\/p>\n

Nigeria won the match in\u00a0 spite of the absence of their top player Asisat Oshola who suffered an injury during Monday\u2019s match and was ruled out of the tournament.<\/p>\n

The Barcelona star, who is a four-time African Footballer of the Year winner, suffered the knee setback that has ruled her out of the competition<\/a>.<\/p>\n

In the absence of the 27-year old attacker, striker Ifeoma Onumonu took charge of the attacking duties and was not overawed by the event.<\/p>\n

Onumonu put the Super Falcons in the lead in the 21st minute when she raced past her markers before putting the ball beyond the advancing goalkeeper Maitumelo Bosija.<\/p>\n

Nigeria extended their lead just after the break,\u00a0when substitute Christy Ucheibe rose highest to powerfully head home with goalkeeper Bosija completely beaten.<\/p>\n

Our correspondent reports that South Africa<\/a> had earlier in the day thumped Burundi 3-1 to lead the group and advance to the quarter-finals.<\/p>\n

Botswana, 4-2 winners over Burundi on the opening day, had led the group following the Super Falcons\u2019 1-2 loss to the Banyana Banyana on Monday.<\/p>\n

Ordega who was adjudged the woman-of-the-match, expressed delight at the outcome of the game, saying that the win was the beginning of better things to come for Nigeria.<\/p>\n

\u201cI am indeed very excited about our performance today, especially after coming from a defeat to South Africa in our first game.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe executed our game plan and came out victorious and winning today has given us more moral.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe are so happy and it is the beginning of good things to come,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n

The Super Falcons will on Sunday come up against their counterparts from Burundi, with a win certain to guarantee a place in the quarter-finals of the championship.<\/p>\n

Botswana on the other hand need at least a draw against South Africa to have hopes of securing a quarter-final spot through the best-losers spot.<\/p>\n

But a win for Botswana can drop Nigeria to third spot, with the title-holders needing to reach the quarter-finals only if they beat Burundi, or get at least a draw.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
