There is heavy security presence in Osogbo, the capital of Osun as the state made\u00a0 final preparations for its\u00a0 governorship election<\/a> billed for\u00a0 Saturday.<\/p>\n

Our correspondent\u00a0 who went round the town on Friday reports that men of the Nigerian Police Force were seen in strategic places.<\/p>\n

Military Armoured Personnel Carrier were also seen patrolling around the town.<\/p>\n

Men of the Nigerian Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), were also seen at strategic places.<\/p>\n

Officials of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC)\u00a0<\/a> were also seen at strategic places controlling the influx of vehicles in and out of the town.<\/p>\n

The office of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) located along Gbongan\/Osogbo road was heavily manned by security.<\/p>\n

Recalls that the Inspector-General of Police (IGP) Usman Alkali Baba, had said that 21,000 police officers would be deployed for the governorship election.<\/p>\n

Baba stated this in Osogbo at the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC<\/a>) Osun 2022 Governorship Election Stakeholders\u2019 Meeting.<\/p>\n

The IGP, however, said the deployment was not to intimidate residents but to prevent miscreants from highjacking or disrupting the election process.<\/p>\n

Similarly, the police had also announced restrictions of both vehicular and human\u00a0 movements during the election.
\n.
\nMr Johnson Kokumo, the Deputy Inspector General of Police in charge of Osun governorship election, made this known at the end of Police interactive session with \u2018Accredited Election Observer Groups\u2019, NGOs and the media, ahead of the election.<\/p>\n

He said human and vehicular movements would be restricted\u00a0 \u00a0from\u00a0 midnight of Saturday till 6.00 p.m of the same date (election day) but essential workers and accredited election observers and media would be allowed to operate.<\/p>\n

Also , the NSCDC had\u00a0 deployed 11,226 personnel to provide security for the election.<\/p>\n

This is contained in a statement by NSCDC Public Relations Officer, Olusola Odumosu,\u00a0 in Abuja.<\/p>\n

The FRSC had also deployed\u00a0 1,500 personnel, 35 vehicles and two trucks and ambulances to clear road obstructions, carry out rescue operations in case of emergencies, and maintain orderliness in polling booths.<\/p>\n

FRSC made this known in a statement, by the Corps Public Education Officer, Bisi Kazeem,\u00a0 in Abuja.<\/p>\n

According to INEC,\u00a0 15 political parties are participating\u00a0 in the election, while 1,955,657 registered voters will decide the fate of the candidates.<\/p>\n

INEC also said the election would take place\u00a0 in 332 registration areas across the 30 local government areas of\u00a0 the state.<\/p>\n

Though, 15 political parties would be participating in the election, the too contenders are the\u00a0 candidate of All Progressives Congress(APC), Gov. Gboyega Oyetola and the candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Sen. Ademola Adeleke.<\/p>\n

This would\u00a0 be the second time the two candidates would be meeting.

\nBoth Oyetola and Adeleke contested for the Osun\u00a0 \u00a0governorship seat\u00a0 in 2018,\u00a0 which Oyetola won after a rerun.<\/p>\n

After the rerun election which took place in seven units, Oyetola won seven, while Adeleke won one.<\/p>\n

At the end of the rerun, Oyetola polled 255,505 votes while the PDP candidate scored a total of 255,023 votes.<\/p>\n

Although Adeleke had led Oyetola\u00a0 with 353 votes at the end of the first round of ballots, but after the rerun,\u00a0 Oyetola won with\u00a0 482 votes.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
