{"id":37170,"date":"2022-07-31T14:26:08","date_gmt":"2022-07-31T14:26:08","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/broadnews\/?p=37170"},"modified":"2022-07-31T14:26:08","modified_gmt":"2022-07-31T14:26:08","slug":"pepfar-shows-substantial-impact-in-babies-born-hiv-free","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/broadnews\/2022\/07\/31\/pepfar-shows-substantial-impact-in-babies-born-hiv-free\/","title":{"rendered":"PEPFAR shows substantial impact in babies born HIV-free"},"content":{"rendered":"<header class=\"entry-header\" aria-label=\"Content\">\n<p class=\"entry-title\">The U.S Global AIDS Coordinator, John Nkengasong, said an additional 3.5 million babies were born HIV-free from 2004 to 2021.<\/p>\n<\/header>\n<div class=\"entry-content\">\n<p>This was part of a report presented on Friday at the 24th <a href=\"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/broadnews\/2022\/03\/02\/scrap-harmful-laws-that-increase-discrimination-against-hiv-aids-patient-unaid\/\"><strong>International AIDS Conference<\/strong><\/a> ongoing in Montreal, Canada.<\/p>\n<p>The News Agency of Nigeria(NAN) reports that the conference which began officially on Friday, July 29, is expected to end on Aug. 2.<\/p>\n<p>John Nkengasong is also the Special Representative for Health Diplomacy Ambassador-at-Large.<\/p>\n<p>Nkengasong said that the impact was achieved through the reduction of HIV incidence and prevalence among adolescent girls, young women, women of childbearing age and adult men.<\/p>\n<p>Nkengasong said that the effort brought about an additional 3.5 million babies born HIV-free from 2004 to 2021.<\/p>\n<p>He said that a total of 5.5 million babies had been born HIV-free as a result of the US President\u2019s Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief (PEPFAR) and its partners.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIn collaboration with countries, communities and our partners, PEPFAR supported comprehensive HIV prevention programming.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis was for adolescent girls, young women and voluntary medical male circumcision, and we scaled up treatment for women and men with viral suppression.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIn total, 5.5 million babies were born HIV-free because of our comprehensive prevention program and this is an incredible milestone for our programme and for the next generation,\u201d Nkengasong said.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The U.S Global AIDS Coordinator, John Nkengasong, said an additional 3.5 million babies were born HIV-free from 2004 to 2021.
