{"id":3719,"date":"2021-12-12T08:32:17","date_gmt":"2021-12-12T08:32:17","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/broadnews\/?p=3719"},"modified":"2021-12-12T08:32:17","modified_gmt":"2021-12-12T08:32:17","slug":"nigeria-suffering-from-15-1-unmet-need-for-family-planning-unfpa","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/broadnews\/2021\/12\/12\/nigeria-suffering-from-15-1-unmet-need-for-family-planning-unfpa\/","title":{"rendered":"Nigeria suffering from 15.1% unmet need for family planning &#8211; UNFPA"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/broadnews\/2021\/12\/01\/amina-mohammed-deputy-secretary-general-of-the-united-nations-visits-nigeria\/\">United Nations Population Fund<\/a> (UNFPA) Country Representative in Nigeria, Ms Ulla Mueller, has revealed that the country has 15.1 per cent unmet need for family planning.<\/p>\n<p>Mueller disclosed this in Abuja at NAN Forum, the flagship interview programme of the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN).<\/p>\n<p>Speaking at the event, Mueller stated that 15.1 per cent of Nigerian women and girls who want Family Planning services do not have access to it due many reasons.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe have an unmet need in Nigeria which is 15.1 per cent. That basically means that 15.1 per cent of women between 15 and 40 want to access contraception, but are denied access.<\/p>\n<p>\u201d In numbers, that is about four million women who want it right now as you and I sit, want to access contraception and have no access,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p>Mueller also stated that UNFPA needed to work more in partnership with development partners in ensuring commodity security.<\/p>\n<p>According to her, a national commodity basket is being supported by UNFPA with focus on ensuring availability.<\/p>\n<p>This move is aimed at making sure the supply chain works using the short term or long term methods.<\/p>\n<p>\u201d That is one of the most critical things that needs to be available for women.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSo if they access services, they can actually get the method of choice. We are also working to build capacity of healthcare workers,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p>Mueller called for advocacy for more women\u2019s access to family planning commodity basket noted that Nigeria\u2019s Modern Contraceptive Prevalence Rate (MCPR) and Traditional Contraceptives Prevalence Rate (TCPR), which stood at 12 per cent and 17 per cent respectively, were very low and a major concern to UNFPA.<\/p>\n<p>However, she congratulated many of the states on their access to family planning commodity basket.<\/p>\n<p>\u2018We also have more and more states now using the basket. so I think some of the achievements is really the FP 20 commitment.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt is to accessibility, availability and informing women that they have a right to choice,\u201d she said<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) Country Representative in Nigeria, Ms Ulla Mueller, has revealed that the country has 15.1 per cent unmet need for family planning.
