{"id":37678,"date":"2022-08-04T07:10:57","date_gmt":"2022-08-04T07:10:57","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/broadnews\/?p=37678"},"modified":"2022-08-04T07:10:57","modified_gmt":"2022-08-04T07:10:57","slug":"alleged-n88-1m-fraud-absence-of-prosecution-witness-stalls-trial","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/broadnews\/2022\/08\/04\/alleged-n88-1m-fraud-absence-of-prosecution-witness-stalls-trial\/","title":{"rendered":"Alleged N88.1m fraud: Absence of prosecution witness stalls trial"},"content":{"rendered":"<header class=\"entry-header\" aria-label=\"Content\"><\/header>\n<div class=\"entry-content\">\n<p>The absence of a prosecution witness on Wednesday, stalled the trial of one Abiodun Amusa charged with N88.1 million fraud before an Ikeja Special Offences Court.<\/p>\n<p>The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that Amusa is standing trial on a four-count charge bordering on possession of fraudulent documents and retention of proceeds of criminal conduct.<\/p>\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/broadnews\/2022\/02\/10\/land-agent-bags-one-year-jail-term-for-n4-3m-fraud\/\">Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC)<\/a> is prosecuting him.<\/p>\n<p>EFCC counsel, Samuel Daji, told the court on Wednesday that prosecutors had planned to close its case but its last witness could not make it to the court.<\/p>\n<p>Daji prayed the court for a short adjournment to enable it to present the witness for evidence.<\/p>\n<p>Defence counsel, Olarewaju Ajanaku, did not object to the submission.<\/p>\n<p>NAN reports that the defendant had pleaded not guilty to the charge when he was arraigned on Nov. 1, 2021.<\/p>\n<p>EFCC alleges that the defendant had between Oct. 24, 2020, and Aug. 20, 2021, in Lagos, retained N88.1 million in his <a href=\"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/broadnews\/2022\/02\/19\/first-bank-vows-to-support-upcoming-music-stars-in-the-entertainment-industry\/\">First Bank<\/a> account which he knew to be proceeds of various internet and cyber crimes.<\/p>\n<p>According to the commission, the alleged offences contravene Sections 1 (3)(d), 6 (8)(b) and 17 (a)(b) of the Advanced Fee Fraud and Other Related Offences, 2006.<\/p>\n<p>Justice Oluwatoyin Taiwo adjourned the case until Aug. 12 for further hearing.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The absence of a prosecution witness on Wednesday, stalled the trial of one Abiodun Amusa charged with N88.1 million fraud before an Ikeja Special Offences Court.
