{"id":37682,"date":"2022-08-04T08:02:54","date_gmt":"2022-08-04T08:02:54","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/broadnews\/?p=37682"},"modified":"2022-08-04T08:02:54","modified_gmt":"2022-08-04T08:02:54","slug":"anambra-commissioner-educates-nursing-mothers-on-breastfeeding","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/broadnews\/2022\/08\/04\/anambra-commissioner-educates-nursing-mothers-on-breastfeeding\/","title":{"rendered":"Anambra commissioner educates nursing mothers on breastfeeding"},"content":{"rendered":"<header class=\"entry-header\" aria-label=\"Content\"><\/header>\n<div class=\"entry-content\">\n<p dir=\"ltr\">The Commissioner for Health in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/broadnews\/2022\/07\/28\/agric-growth-scheme-rep-faults-exclusion-of-anambra-enugu\/\">Anambra<\/a>, Dr. Afam Obisike, has advised nursing mothers in the state not to relent in giving exclusive breastfeeding to their newborns because of its numerous health benefits.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">Obidike gave the advice in Awka on Wednesday during a news briefing to herald the 2022 World Breastfeeding Week.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">He said that exclusive breastfeeding helps to protect the child from ovarian cancer, diarrhea, heart diseases, and pneumonia, among other diseases.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">According to him, the practice also helps to protect nursing mothers from diseases and reduces infant morbidity and maternal mortality.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">Obidike was represented at the briefing by Dr. Chioma Ezenyimulu, the Executive Secretary of the state Primary Healthcare Development Agency.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">He said that non-adherence to exclusive breastfeeding exposes children to sicknesses, which often result in infant mortality.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">The commissioner said that the state had made significant improvements in the nutrition of children since 2018.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">\u201cUNICEF reported that about 60 percent of the world\u2019s infants are missing in the recommended first six months of exclusive breastfeeding,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">He further said that World Breastfeeding Week, celebrated from August 1 to 7 every year to encourage breastfeeding, is intended to improve the children\u2019s wellbeing.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">Speaking on the activities of ASPHDA, Ezenyimulu said that the agency would also organize a programme for nursing mothers. She said that commodities\u00a0and bed nets would be distributed free of charge during the programme.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">The ASPHDA boss said that the celebration would be devoted to informing people about their role in strengthening the bond between mother and child.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">She expressed delight that the state had moved from 14 per cent to nine percent in the number of children under five with stunted growth.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">She said that the week-long event would be launched on Thursday, August 4 by Gov.
