{"id":37735,"date":"2022-08-04T09:32:29","date_gmt":"2022-08-04T09:32:29","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/broadnews\/?p=37735"},"modified":"2022-08-04T09:32:29","modified_gmt":"2022-08-04T09:32:29","slug":"its-illegal-to-disconnect-electricity-without-10-days-notice-commission","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/broadnews\/2022\/08\/04\/its-illegal-to-disconnect-electricity-without-10-days-notice-commission\/","title":{"rendered":"It\u2019s illegal to disconnect electricity without 10 days notice \u2013 Commission"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/broadnews\/2022\/06\/21\/stop-building-structures-near-poles-transformers-jos-electricity-company-warns\/\"><strong>Federal Competition and Consumer Protection Commission (FCCPC)<\/strong> <\/a>says it is illegal to disconnect a consumer from source of power supply without a 10-day prior notice from the date of bill delivery.<\/p>\n<p>Mr Babatunde Irukera, Executive Vice Chairman of the commission, stated this on Wednesday in Calabar at an electricity consumer complaint resolution platform.<\/p>\n<p>Irukera bemoaned the abysmal service provided by Port Harcourt Electricity Distribution Company (PHED) in Calabar and its environs.<\/p>\n<p>He said from investigation by the commission, PHED had not faired well in the providing of services to its consumers commensurate with their bills.<\/p>\n<p>Irukera particularly described as \u201coppressive \u201d PHEDC services to residents of Cross River State.<\/p>\n<p>He said that the reports they received on many issues included mass disconnection carried out by the company without recourse to the law.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI want to convey to you the incredible displeasure of the people of Cross River, according to them, especially the governor , if they have their way , they will prefer that PHEDC does not operate in the state.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf this is the view about your business , then I don\u2019t think that business will survive.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe massive disconnection of communities because of debt is not only illegal, it is outrageous and an abuse of the peoples right. Disconnecting the whole community is oppressive .<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere are people in that same community that are consistent with payment of bills, so it is injustice and unfair to also disconnect them.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAny business that cannot satisfy its consumers is preparing to die; allowing consumers to pay tariffs without commensurate electricity supply is against the law.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe problem of compelling consumers to pay electricity bills is tantamount to oppressing and extorting money illegally from consumers.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe internal mechanism for assessing scorecard of electricity companies is not by collection of tariffs, rather it is customer satisfaction that matters.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Irukera said a situation where Discos disconnect power supply for days and still give out bills covering that same period was \u201cexploitative.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He explained that it was illegal for consumers to buy transformers, and they would later become the property of PHEDC.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The Federal Competition and Consumer Protection Commission (FCCPC) says it is illegal to disconnect a consumer from source of power supply without a 10-day prior notice from the date of bill delivery.
