Healthcare workers at\u00a0 the Ajeromi-Ifelodun General Hospital, Ajegunle, on Friday urged husbands, families and friends to support breastfeeding mothers<\/a> around them.<\/p>\n<\/header>\n

They also urged individuals to help nursing mothers to achieve exclusive breastfeeding of their babies.<\/div>\n

They spoke at an event to celebrate the\u00a0 2022 World Breastfeeding\u00a0 Week, usually celebrated yearly from Aug.1 to Aug.7.<\/span><\/span><\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the 2022 theme for World Breastfeeding Week is \u201cStep up for Breastfeeding: Educate and Support\u201d.<\/span><\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
It seeks to involve governments, communities, and individuals.\u00a0<\/span><\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
The\u00a0Ajeromi-Ifelodun General Hospital, Ajegunle, celebrated the 2002\u00a0World Breastfeeding Week in the hospital premises and\u00a0 with the aim to raise awareness on the need to educate and support mothers around on the importance of breastfeeding.<\/span><\/div>\n
\u00a0<\/span><\/div>\n
The Medical Director,\u00a0Ajeromi-Ifelodun General Hospital, Ajegunle,\u00a0<\/span>Dr. Olufemi Orebanjo,\u00a0 said that all Nigerian<\/span>\u00a0women should be encouraged to exclusively breastfeed their babies because breast milk<\/span>\u00a0had all nutrients required for brain growth and general body development.<\/span><\/div>\n
\u00a0<\/span><\/div>\n
He also said that government had put in place an arrangement for nursing mothers to breastfeed babies even while at work.<\/span><\/div>\n
\u00a0<\/span><\/div>\n
\u201cIn order to make breastfeeding for the first six months of babies life achievable, our government has created a creche room where we can keep babies and breastfeed them even during work hours.<\/span><\/div>\n
\u00a0<\/span><\/div>\n
\u201cSo, we seek support from husbands, families and friends to help breastfeeding mother to do either house chores or run errands for them while they breastfeed their babies,\u201d he said.<\/span><\/div>\n
\u00a0<\/span><\/div>\n
Orebanjo also urged individuals at work place to give chances to breastfeeding mothers<\/a> to attend to their babies while at work.<\/span><\/div>\n
\u00a0<\/span><\/div>\n
Also<\/span>, the Apex Nurse of the hospital, Esther Akerele, said that breastmilk is very paramount to the child at the first six months of life as it fights antibodies that may cause sickness in babies.<\/span><\/div>\n
\u00a0<\/span><\/div>\n
She also said\u00a0 that breastfeeding\u00a0 could\u00a0 be extended till when a child\u00a0 got to\u00a0 two years with complementary feeding alongside.<\/span><\/div>\n
\u00a0<\/span><\/div>\n
Akerele said that the first milk discharged from mothers breast,\u00a0 called \u201ccolostrum\u201d, was very healthy for babies.<\/span><\/div>\n
\u00a0<\/span><\/div>\n
\u201cThe first milk that is extracted from breast is very healthy and its called colostrum but to some women they will say its a dirty milk,nothing like dirty but the best.<\/span><\/div>\n
\u00a0<\/span><\/div>\n
\u201cThe colostrum makes the baby body fights infection and makes them strong throughout life.<\/span><\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
\u201cI am also advising health workers to monitor and educate\u00a0 mothers on the need to allow babies take the colostrum,\u201d she said.<\/span><\/div>\n
\u00a0<\/span><\/div>\n
She advised mothers to allow their babies to suck immediately after they put to birth.<\/span><\/div>\n
\u00a0<\/span><\/div>\n
However, the Nutritionist of the hospital, Olusola Malomo, advised working mothers to extract milk before going to work, saying it was safer than over-the-counter milk.<\/span><\/div>\n
\u00a0<\/span><\/div>\n
\u201cFor those who do not have the opportunity to stay at home for six months, exclusive breastfeeding is still achievable through extraction. <\/span>All you need to do is extract the milk into a cup and refrigerate,even without refrigeration the milk can stay for eight hours.<\/span><\/div>\n
\u00a0<\/span><\/div>\n
\u201cYour child carer should just get a hot water and place the milk cup inside hot water and that is all,the baby can then eat it,\u201d he said.<\/span><\/div>\n
\u00a0<\/span><\/div>\n
Malomo, however, urged breastfeeding mothers to eat a balanced diet.<\/span><\/div>\n
\u00a0<\/span><\/div>\n
