{"id":38693,"date":"2022-08-11T11:18:32","date_gmt":"2022-08-11T11:18:32","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/broadnews\/?p=38693"},"modified":"2022-08-11T11:18:32","modified_gmt":"2022-08-11T11:18:32","slug":"grain-initiative-12-vessels-authorised-to-depart-ukrainian-ports-coordinator","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/broadnews\/2022\/08\/11\/grain-initiative-12-vessels-authorised-to-depart-ukrainian-ports-coordinator\/","title":{"rendered":"Grain initiative: 12 vessels authorised to depart Ukrainian ports \u2013 Coordinator"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Mr Frederick Kenney, Acting Coordinator for the UN at the Joint Coordination Centre for the Black Sea Initiative, \u00a0has said that 12 vessels have been authorised to depart the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/broadnews\/2022\/08\/03\/iaea-chief-grossi-concerned-about-ukrainian-nuclear-power-plant\/\">Ukrainian<\/a> ports.<\/p>\n<p>Kenney disclosed this to journalists in New York on Wednesday via video link from Istanbul, Turkey that the ships contained more than 370,000 tonnes \u00a0of grain and other food items.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThose vessels had been stranded in the three ports covered by the initiative when the war started, \u201che said.<\/p>\n<p>The initiative specifically allows for significant volumes of commercial food exports from three key Ukrainian ports in the Black Sea \u2013 Odessa, Chernomorsk and Yuzhny.<\/p>\n<p>During the agreement signing ceremony in Istanbul on July 22, UN Secretary-General Ant\u00f3nio Guterres called the initiative \u201ca beacon of hope\u201d in a world that desperately needs it.<\/p>\n<p>He also announced the establishment of the Joint Coordination Centre to monitor the implementation that would be hosted in Istanbul and include <a href=\"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/broadnews\/2022\/08\/10\/kwara-govt-signs-minimum-wage-agreement-with-tertiary-institutions\/\">representatives<\/a> from Ukraine, Russia and Turkey.<\/p>\n<p>Kenney said that the initiative had produced detailed procedures for participating vessels to follow, which had been disseminated to the shipping industry earlier this week.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOur priority is to free up pier space in those ports so that the vessels come in and take new cargo.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe have also authorised the movement of four vessels into the Ukrainian park ports so far for loading,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>The UN interim Coordinator reminded that the agreement is scheduled to last for 120 days.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe still have much work ahead of us to ensure that the implementation of the initiative translates into real results to address food insecurity around the globe and to stabilise global food markets.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe are off with a very good start,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile, UN Spokesperson St\u00e9phane Dujarric clarified a question raised by a journalist on a possible discount afforded to Turkey\u2019s purchase of Ukrainian grain.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe did much research, as much research as possible, and I can tell you that there was no discount built into the Black Sea Grain Initiative agreement that was signed in Istanbul.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFurthermore, we are not aware of any other agreement that would guarantee such a discount,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Mr Frederick Kenney, Acting Coordinator for the UN at the Joint Coordination Centre for the Black Sea Initiative, \u00a0has said that 12 vessels have been authorised to depart the Ukrainian ports.
