{"id":39670,"date":"2022-08-18T15:53:11","date_gmt":"2022-08-18T15:53:11","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/broadnews\/?p=39670"},"modified":"2022-08-18T15:53:11","modified_gmt":"2022-08-18T15:53:11","slug":"cislac-calls-for-hike-in-tobacco-tax","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/broadnews\/2022\/08\/18\/cislac-calls-for-hike-in-tobacco-tax\/","title":{"rendered":"CISLAC calls for hike in tobacco tax\u00a0"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/broadnews\/2022\/06\/05\/csos-task-political-parties-on-transparency-rules-based-primaries\/\"><strong>Civil Society Legislative Advocacy Centre (CISLAC)<\/strong> <\/a>has called for a hike in Tobacco tax to control smoking and its adverse effects on public health, economy and environment.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt\">The CISLAC Programme Officer in Bauchi State, Mr Solomon Adoga, made the call in Bauchi <\/span><span style=\"font-size: 12pt\">during a roundtable on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/broadnews\/2022\/06\/21\/regulate-tobacco-industrys-activities-in-nigerias-virtual-space-ngo-urges-fg\/\"><strong>Tobacco Tax Advocacy<\/strong><\/a> in Nigeria.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt\">He said that understanding the Framework Convention on Tobacco Control (FCTC) Article 6 and.Nigeria\u2019s<\/span><span style=\"font-size: 12pt\"> Tobacco Tax could not be over emphasised.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt\">He added that \u201ctobacco smoking is a pandemic that needs collective action through sensitisation and high tax.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt\">\u201cNigeria has the third Tobacco market in Africa and to control that, there should be a hike in tobacco tax.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt\">\u00a0He explained that tobacco smoking induces a poverty cycle in the household and by extension to the society.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt\">Adoga said that research revealed that 69 per cent of the toxic chemicals in tobacco smoke is the cause of the <\/span><span style=\"font-size: 12pt\">various cancers and chronic diseases around the world.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt\">He added that \u201cnicotine is the addictive substance in tobacco, when you inhale tobacco smoke, the nicotine <\/span><span style=\"font-size: 12pt\">substance in tobacco flows into your bloodstream and goes to the brain, inducing pleasurable feelings.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt\">\u201cAs you repeatedly expose your brain to nicotine, you will crave nicotine more and more, and gradually, <\/span><span style=\"font-size: 12pt\">smokers have to maintain a level of nicotine in the blood for normal functioning.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt\">\u201cAnother thing is that smokers have to continue to smoke to avoid the discomfort experienced while not <\/span><span style=\"font-size: 12pt\">smoking.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt\">The programme officer said statistics revealed that Nigerians spent an average total of N7.45 billion on <\/span><span style=\"font-size: 12pt\">tobacco monthly and N89.5 billion yearly.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt\">\u00a0\u201cIt is however important to note that the growth in Nigeria\u2019s population has resulted in no significant reduction in smoking prevalence over the years,\u201d he said.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt\">Adoga said the tobacco industry made huge profits unchecked without taking responsibility for the harm to public health.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt\">He emphasised that increasing tobacco taxes and prices was recognised worldwide as the single most cost-effective measure of tobacco control and a critical component of a comprehensive tobacco control strategy.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt\">He said the measures can reduce overall tobacco use, prevent initiation among youths and promote cessation among current users.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt\">He suggested that evidence be generated for a way forward.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt\">Another way, he said, was to advocate for the implementation of Track and Trace System to cushion illicit trade in tobacco products.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt\">Present at the Bauchi meeting were Civil Society Organisations, officials of line ministries and the media.<\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Civil Society Legislative Advocacy Centre (CISLAC) has called for a hike in Tobacco tax to control smoking and its adverse effects on public health, economy and environment.
