{"id":39709,"date":"2022-08-18T21:47:30","date_gmt":"2022-08-18T21:47:30","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/broadnews\/?p=39709"},"modified":"2022-08-18T21:47:30","modified_gmt":"2022-08-18T21:47:30","slug":"court-sentences-man-to-37-years-imprisonment-for-defiling-minor-in-lagos","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/broadnews\/2022\/08\/18\/court-sentences-man-to-37-years-imprisonment-for-defiling-minor-in-lagos\/","title":{"rendered":"Court sentences man to 37 years imprisonment for defiling minor in Lagos"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"text-align: left\">Justice Oluwatoyin Taiwo of an Ikeja Special Offences <a href=\"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/broadnews\/2022\/08\/17\/court-remands-man-for-allegedly-robbing-police-officer\/\">Court<\/a> on Thursday slammed a 37-year jail term on one Moses Joseph for defiling a minor.<\/p>\n<p>Taiwo, in her judgment, said that from the substantial evidences presented before the court, she found the defendant guilty of the crime.<\/p>\n<p>The judge, after listening to the allocutus of the defence counsel, asked the defendant if he had anything to say to the court and he prayed for mercy.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe substantial evidences are overwhelming. Therefore, I find the defendant guilty of all counts.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI have listened to the allocutus for the defence and on the first count I sentence you to seven years imprisonment and on the second count, I sentence you to 30 years imprisonment which will run concurrently\u201d, the judge said.<\/p>\n<p>Earlier during the allocutus, defence counsel, Henry Obidinna, pleaded with the court to tamper justice with mercy and for a light sentence \u201cas the convict was a first time offender.<\/p>\n<p>He added that the convict had been corporative since his arrest in September 2021 and had been remorseful.<\/p>\n<p>Obidinna said the convict was the breadwinner of his family and his younger brother died from shock when he heard of the his arrest.<\/p>\n<p>He added that the event had been kept away from the convict\u2019s aged mother.<\/p>\n<p>The Lagos State, which is prosecuting the case, did not object to the judgment.<\/p>\n<p>The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that prosecution had alleged that the defendant, on Sept. 17, 2021, about 11:00 p.m. indecently treated the minor by inserting his finger in her private part.<\/p>\n<p>It said that the crime took place at No. 25, Kadiri St., Alausa, Ikeja, in contravention of Sections 135, 137 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2015.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Justice Oluwatoyin Taiwo of an Ikeja Special Offences Court on Thursday slammed a 37-year jail term on one Moses Joseph for defiling a minor.
