{"id":40592,"date":"2022-08-25T09:37:42","date_gmt":"2022-08-25T09:37:42","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/broadnews\/?p=40592"},"modified":"2022-08-25T09:37:42","modified_gmt":"2022-08-25T09:37:42","slug":"un-steps-up-efforts-to-contain-cholera-in-malawi","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/broadnews\/2022\/08\/25\/un-steps-up-efforts-to-contain-cholera-in-malawi\/","title":{"rendered":"UN steps up efforts to contain Cholera in Malawi"},"content":{"rendered":"<header class=\"entry-header\" aria-label=\"Content\">\n<p class=\"entry-title\">\u00a0The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/broadnews\/2022\/08\/08\/unicef-lauds-kebbi-govt-for-signing-the-child-rights-act\/\"><strong>United Nations Children\u2019s Fund (UNICEF)<\/strong><\/a> and the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/broadnews\/2022\/08\/25\/who-lauds-kano-govt-for-scaling-up-covid-19-vaccination\/\"><strong>World Health Organisation (WHO)<\/strong> <\/a>have stepped up their ongoing activities to support the Government of Malawi in containing and preventing the spread of this preventable disease in more districts.<\/p>\n<\/header>\n<div class=\"entry-content\">\n<p>WHO, in a statement on Wednesday, said the outbreak, initially limited to the southern part of the country, had now spread to Malawi\u2019s northern and central regions.<\/p>\n<p>To date, 1,483 cases and 58 deaths have been recorded, with the case fatality rate at 3.9 per cent, according to a Government press statement issued on Monday.<\/p>\n<p>Cases continue to rise outside the traditional hotspot districts, affecting lakeshore communities and crowded, urban areas with insufficient water and sanitation facilities.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe impact of the larger outbreak will overwhelm the already over-burdened public health services and health-care delivery systems in the country, so we must act now.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe good news is that we know the solutions,\u2019\u2019 UNICEF Malawi Representative Rudolf Schwenk said.<\/p>\n<p>UNICEF and WHO are appealing to partners and donors for additional funds and support to address these challenges and contain the outbreak.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEvery death from cholera is preventable with the tools we have today,\u201d WHO Country Representative Neema Kimambo said.<\/p>\n<p>The representative said the UN agency would continue to support the Health Ministry in \u201cimplementing immediate and long-term cholera control, response and preventive measures\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile, WHO on Wednesday announced a new drive to find ways of revamping the African region\u2019s health systems, in the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe COVID-19 pandemic highlighted the fragility of our continent\u2019s health infrastructure and the urgent need to strengthen the overall health system.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt highlights urgent need to strengthen the health system to secure access to quality care for all Africa\u2019s people, when and where they need it, without incurring financial hardship,\u201d WHO\u2019s Africa Regional Director Matshidiso Moeti, said.<\/p>\n<p>To rethink and rebuild resilient health systems on the continent, WHO\u2019s Regional Committee for Africa has been meeting this week in Lom\u00e9, Togo.<\/p>\n<p>There, they are examining measures in achieving universal access to health care and exploring how to maintain essential services during outbreaks, as well as the investments and actions needed for quality medical products and health technologies.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDomestic investment in health, including health research, has significant economic returns, while promoting resilience and sustainability; healthy populations translate to healthy economies,\u201d Moeti said.<\/p>\n<p>COVID-19 has exerted enormous pressure on health systems, adding to the African region\u2019s existing health challenges, which responds to more than 100 health emergencies every year, according to WHO.<\/p>\n<p>Emergencies trigger health programme shutdowns that undermine progress towards universal health coverage and lay bare inequities in access to health care.<\/p>\n<p>A special event launched at the Regional Committee kicks off a collective process to support African countries as they ramp up efforts to recover from the pandemic-triggered disruptions and work to rebuild their health systems.<\/p>\n<p>A series of consultations and actions will follow to support countries in achieving universal health coverage and health security.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>\u00a0The United Nations Children\u2019s Fund (UNICEF) and the World Health Organisation (WHO) have stepped up their ongoing activities to support the Government of Malawi in containing and preventing the spread of this preventable disease in more districts.
