The runner-up in Gambia\u2019s election that was held on Monday, Ousainou Darboe, has revealed that his party had launched a legal challenge to President Adama Barrow\u2019s<\/a> victory.<\/p>\n

Barrow won the Dec. 4 poll with 53 per cent of the vote, well ahead of Darboe who got about 28 per cent.<\/p>\n

The election was the first in 27 years without despotic former president Yahya Jammeh and was seen as a test of the tiny West African nation\u2019s fragile democracy.<\/p>\n

However, things have taken a new twist just a day after the poll with Darboe and two other candidates stating that they did not accept the results.<\/p>\n

According to them, the vote count took longer than expected and because of alleged problems at polling stations.<\/p>\n

Though they’ve not provided any evidence of wrongdoing, Almamy Taal, the Spokesman for Darboe\u2019s United Democratic Party (UDP), told the press that \u201cafter our executive meeting on Friday with our lawyers we have decided to file a petition today at the Supreme Court.\u2019\u2019<\/p>\n

Taal did not set out the grounds of the complaint.<\/p>\n

Election observers from the African Union said the election was conducted in line with international standards and European Union observers praised the transparency of the voting and counting processes.<\/p>\n

Hundreds of Dardoe’s supporters who took to the streets in protest last week were fired tear gas by the police<\/p>\n

Gambia\u2019s constitution states that any party or candidate not satisfied with a presidential poll can file a petition within 10 days of the results and the court would fix a date for hearing the case.<\/p>\n
