{"id":41518,"date":"2022-09-01T07:41:59","date_gmt":"2022-09-01T07:41:59","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/broadnews\/?p=41518"},"modified":"2022-09-01T07:41:59","modified_gmt":"2022-09-01T07:41:59","slug":"who-anticipates-winter-surge-in-covid-19-hospitalisations-deaths","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/broadnews\/2022\/09\/01\/who-anticipates-winter-surge-in-covid-19-hospitalisations-deaths\/","title":{"rendered":"WHO anticipates winter \u201csurge\u201d in COVID-19 hospitalisations, deaths"},"content":{"rendered":"<header class=\"entry-header\" aria-label=\"Content\">\n<p class=\"entry-title\">The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/broadnews\/2022\/08\/25\/who-lauds-kano-govt-for-scaling-up-covid-19-vaccination\/\"><strong>World Health Organisation (WHO)<\/strong> <\/a>says the onset of winter in northern countries could spike COVID-19 hospitalisation and deaths.<\/p>\n<\/header>\n<div class=\"entry-content\">\n<p>It, therefore, urged people to get vaccinated to stop the spread of the virus.<\/p>\n<p>WHO Director General, Tedros Ghebreyesus, said this at a media conference on Wednesday at the UN health agency\u2019s headquarters in Geneva.<\/p>\n<p>Ghebreyesus urged people to get vaccinated to reduce the spread of the disease or, if they were already vaccinated, to get further boosters.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe are now seeing a welcome decline in reported deaths globally.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHowever, with colder weather approaching in the northern hemisphere, it\u2019s reasonable to expect an increase in hospitalisations and deaths in the coming months,\u2019\u2019 he said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSub-variants of Omicron are more transmissible than their predecessors and the risk of even more transmissible and more dangerous variants remains.\u2019\u2019<\/p>\n<p>Vaccination coverage among the most at-risk groups \u2013 such as health workers and older persons \u2013 also remains too low, he added, especially in poorer countries.<\/p>\n<p>The WHO chief reminded people everywhere to continue to take action to reduce the risk of infection \u2013 even if already vaccinated.<\/p>\n<p>Steps include avoiding crowds, especially indoors, and wearing a mask.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cLiving with COVID-19 doesn\u2019t mean pretending the pandemic is over.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf you go walking in the rain without an umbrella, pretending it\u2019s not raining won\u2019t help you.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou\u2019ll still get wet; likewise, pretending a deadly virus is not circulating is a huge risk,\u2019\u2019 he said.<\/p>\n<p>According to him, nearly 600 million cases of COVID-19 have been recorded, some 2.5 years into the pandemic globally.<\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile, Europe is projected to reach 250 million cases in a matter of weeks, Dr Hans Kluge, Director of WHO\u2019s Office for the region said.<\/p>\n<p>Like Ghebreyesus, he also anticipates the winter \u201csurge\u201d in cases.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe have made great strides in addressing the pandemic.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBut the virus is still circulating widely, still putting people in hospital,<\/p>\n<p>\u201cStill causing too many preventable deaths \u2013 some 3,000 in the past week alone, about a third of the global recorded total,\u2019\u2019 Kluge said in a statement on Tuesday.<\/p>\n<p>Europe is also home to around a third of the global caseload for the continuing Monkeypox outbreak, with 22,000 confirmed cases across 43 countries.<\/p>\n<p>The Americas account for more than half of all reported cases, with several countries continuing to see a rise in infections.<\/p>\n<p>WHO noted that some European countries, including Germany and the Netherlands, are also seeing a clear decline in infections.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis development demonstrates the effectiveness of public health interventions and community engagement to track infections and prevent transmission,\u2019\u2019\u2019 the agency said.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The World Health Organisation (WHO) says the onset of winter in northern countries could spike COVID-19 hospitalisation and deaths.
