{"id":4227,"date":"2021-12-14T19:26:53","date_gmt":"2021-12-14T19:26:53","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/broadnews\/?p=4227"},"modified":"2021-12-14T19:26:53","modified_gmt":"2021-12-14T19:26:53","slug":"center-expresses-concern-about-the-health-risks-of-cooking-with-firewood","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/broadnews\/2021\/12\/14\/center-expresses-concern-about-the-health-risks-of-cooking-with-firewood\/","title":{"rendered":"Center expresses concern about the health risks of cooking with firewood"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The International Centre for Energy, Environment, and Development (ICEED) has expressed concern about the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/broadnews\/2021\/12\/12\/99-of-household-in-jigawa-replaced-with-mosquito-nets-official\/\">health<\/a> risks and environmental impact of cooking with firewood.<\/p>\n<p>Mr Ewah Eleri, Executive Director of the Centre, stated this on Monday at the launch of the Clean Cooking program in Abakaliki.<\/p>\n<p>According to Eleri, the use of wood for cooking contributes to environmental degradation and climate change.<\/p>\n<p>According to the World Health Organization, 78,000 Nigerians died as a result of inhaling smoke while <a href=\"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/broadnews\/2021\/11\/22\/okowa-wants-the-federal-government-to-address-hike-in-price-of-cooking-gas\/\">cooking<\/a> with firewood.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The program, which was launched today, will bring the benefits of clean cooking to 130 households and small businesses in the state, as well as 30 boarding schools.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;It will increase access to modern and healthy cooking as well as domestic production of clean cookstoves in the state&#8217;s 13 LGAs,&#8221; Eleri said.<\/p>\n<p>Mrs Richael Umahi, the governor&#8217;s wife in Ebonyi, stated that affordable, dependable, and research-based cooking methods had become critical to ensuring a healthy environment.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_4339\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-4339\" style=\"width: 485px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-4339\" src=\"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/broadnews\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/11\/images-2021-12-14T201951.396.jpeg\" alt=\"\" width=\"485\" height=\"633\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/broadnews\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/11\/images-2021-12-14T201951.396.jpeg 485w, https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/broadnews\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/11\/images-2021-12-14T201951.396-230x300.jpeg 230w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 485px) 100vw, 485px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-4339\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Wife of Ebonyi governor, Mrs Richael Umahi<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Umahi expressed hope that the method would save lives, particularly those in rural communities.<\/p>\n<p>She urged students in boarding secondary schools to continue practicing efficient clean cooking.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I am grateful to ICEED and the Heinrich Boll Stiftung for this lofty initiative.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;It will have a positive impact on our people and will encourage the center to do more research development for affordable cooking methods,&#8221; Mrs Umahi said.<\/p>\n<p>Also addressing, Mr Steven Odo, Commissioner for Commerce, Industry, and Business Development, suggested that the idea be used to promote entrepreneurship and economic development.<\/p>\n<p>Odo stated that the involvement of key stakeholders would hasten the achievement of the initiative&#8217;s goals.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The International Centre for Energy, Environment, and Development (ICEED) has expressed concern about the health risks and environmental impact of cooking with firewood.
