Dr Joe Okei-Odumakin, President, Women Arise, an NGO, has congratulated Liz Truss<\/strong><\/a>, the new United Kingdom\u2019s Prime Minister, who replaced Mr Boris Johnson.<\/p>\n<\/header>\n

\n

Johnson resigned in July<\/strong><\/a>, following some allegations.<\/p>\n

Truss was on Monday, announced as the new leader of UK Conservative Party.<\/p>\n

She defeated her rival, Rishi Sunak in a Tory vote, where she polled 81,326 votes to beat Sunak with 60,399 votes.<\/p>\n

As the leader of the ruling Conservative Party, Truss, 47, is now British prime minister, replacing Johnson who resigned early July, after a scandal-hit the\u00a0 government.<\/p>\n

She would be the third UK female prime minister, following Margaret Thatcher and Theresa May.<\/p>\n

Okei-Odumakin, also a human rights activist, commended the ease with which power transitions happened in the United Kingdom.<\/p>\n

She noted that it made one wonder if African countries, adding that It always came with a sobering effect, when one dared to compare.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe emergence of the new UK prime minister implies a lot. The position of UK as a leader, among democratic nations, is constant.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe UK, not only has a culture of female sovereigns, Truss is the third female prime minister since Margaret Thatcher and this becomes more commendable, when one looks around the world and the contrast sinks in.<\/p>\n

\u201cAt this moment, it is not so much about the success of an individual, it is about the success of the society.<\/p>\n

\u201cHer emergence is a good example for African countries and this is worthy of emulation,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n

Before her emergence a Tory leader and British PM, Truss was UK\u2019s secretary of state for foreign, commonwealth and development affairs, since 2021 and minister for women and equalities, since 2019.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
