{"id":42635,"date":"2022-09-08T16:25:37","date_gmt":"2022-09-08T16:25:37","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/broadnews\/?p=42635"},"modified":"2022-09-08T16:25:37","modified_gmt":"2022-09-08T16:25:37","slug":"sambo-reiterates-need-to-implement-a-nigerian-fleet","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/broadnews\/2022\/09\/08\/sambo-reiterates-need-to-implement-a-nigerian-fleet\/","title":{"rendered":"Sambo reiterates need to implement a Nigerian fleet"},"content":{"rendered":"<header class=\"entry-header\" aria-label=\"Content\">\n<p class=\"entry-title\">The Minister of Transportation, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/broadnews\/2022\/09\/03\/eastern-rail-line-work-halted-due-to-insecurity-vandalism-minister\/\"><strong>Mr Mu\u2019azu Sambo,<\/strong> <\/a>has reiterated the need for the country to establish and implement a strong and sustainable national fleet.<\/p>\n<\/header>\n<div class=\"entry-content\">\n<p>Sambo said this in a statement by Mr Eric Ojiekwe, the Director, Press and Public Relations of the ministry on Wednesday in Abuja.<\/p>\n<p>The minister was speaking when he received an interim report on the establishment of the fleet by the Nigerian Fleet Implementation Committee in Abuja.<\/p>\n<p>Sambo said: \u201cNigeria is a maritime country and if Nigeria gets its acts together, we will have no business looking for money from the oil sector as contribution to the GDP of the country.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI don\u2019t know whether in the course of the committee\u2019s consultations with other stakeholders, you were able to have some conversations with the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/broadnews\/2022\/08\/13\/nnpc-contractors-renew-production-sharing-agreements\/\"><strong>Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC).<\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u201dThis is because, if NNPC can give 100 per cent support, this matter can be closed in two months.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHow can we be an oil producer, I think we are the sixth\u00a0largest oil producers in the world and I don\u2019t think that position has shifted and yet we don\u2019t have one single boat carrier.<\/p>\n<p>\u201dI will approach <a href=\"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/broadnews\/2022\/09\/08\/buhari-salutes-emir-of-zazzau-suleja-awwal-ibrahim-at-81\/\"><strong>President Mohammadu Buhari<\/strong><\/a> and\u00a0the Minister of State for Petroleum Resources on the prospects and implementation of the Nigerian fleet,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>Earlier, the Executive Secretary, Nigerian Shippers\u2019 Council and Chairman, Nigerian Fleet Implementation Committee (NFIC),\u00a0Mr Emmanuel Jime said the committee was constituted by the immediate past Minister of Transportation, Rotimi Amaechi.<\/p>\n<p>Jime, represented by Managing Director, Sea Transport Group and member, NFIC, Mr Umar Aminu said the committee was constituted to implement recommendations in the report by an earlier Ministerial Committee on Modalities for the Establishment of a Nigerian Fleet.<\/p>\n<p>He said the initiative was a way of responding to the non- participation of Nigerians in the carriage of Nigeria\u2019s international cargo.<\/p>\n<p>He further said it would help address the loss of freight revenue, jobs and other benefits, which would otherwise have accrued to the country.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIn the course of carrying out the mandate, lessons have been learnt and some modest achievements have been recorded.<\/p>\n<p>\u201dThese have been captured in this interim report which we are submitting today.<\/p>\n<p>\u201dThe work is still ongoing and the goal of creating an enabling environment for the growth of sustainable Nigerian fleet will be achieved in due course, \u201cJime added.<\/p>\n<p>The NSC boss\u00a0noted that there were, however, some challenges that impeded the quick realisation of the project as earlier envisaged.<\/p>\n<p>According to him, shipping is international and competitive in nature and Nigeria cannot operate in isolation, hence the need for the operating environment to be similar to what obtains internationally.<\/p>\n<p>He said the review of certain trade policies, access to funds and technical\/human capacity were issues that needed to be resolved to ensure success of the initiative.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The Minister of Transportation, Mr Mu\u2019azu Sambo, has reiterated the need for the country to establish and implement a strong and sustainable national fleet.
