{"id":43525,"date":"2022-10-11T10:17:08","date_gmt":"2022-10-11T10:17:08","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/broadnews\/?p=43525"},"modified":"2022-10-11T10:17:08","modified_gmt":"2022-10-11T10:17:08","slug":"no-legal-basis-to-act-on-russian-super-yacht-hong-kong-leader","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/broadnews\/2022\/10\/11\/no-legal-basis-to-act-on-russian-super-yacht-hong-kong-leader\/","title":{"rendered":"No legal basis to act on Russian super yacht &#8211; Hong Kong leader"},"content":{"rendered":"<header class=\"entry-header\" aria-label=\"Content\">\n<p class=\"entry-title\">Hong Kong leader, John Lee, on Tuesday said there was \u201cno legal basis\u201d for the city to act on Western sanctions.<\/p>\n<\/header>\n<div class=\"entry-content\">\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">He said this when asked about a Russian yacht berthed in the financial centre that belonged to a sanctioned Russian oligarch.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/broadnews\/2022\/01\/31\/hong-kongs-home-secretary-resigns-for-attending-large-party-during-pandemic\/\"><strong>Hong Kong authorities<\/strong><\/a> were criticised by the U.S. State Department for allowing a luxury yacht belonging to sanctioned Russian oligarch, Alexey Mordashov, to dock in Hong Kong waters last week.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">The U.S. State Department said the use of Hong Kong by individuals evading sanctions from multiple jurisdictions could carry reputational risks and call into question the transparency of the financial hub\u2019s business environment.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">However, Lee, who himself had been sanctioned by the U.S. for his role in clamping down on local freedoms, said Hong Kong wouldn\u2019t act on unilateral sanctions imposed on Mordashov by individual jurisdictions.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">\u201cWe cannot do anything that has no legal basis,\u201d Lee told reporters.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Instead, Lee said Hong Kong would only abide by United Nation sanctions.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">\u201cWe will comply with UN sanctions,that is our system, that is our rule of law,\u201d he said.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Mordashov, a billionaire close to President Vladimir Putin, was among a number of Russian oligarchs sanctioned by the European Union and the U.S., but not the United Nations after Russia\u2019s invasion of Ukraine for their links to Putin.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">While a number of Russian super yachts have been seized or denied entry in Europe and other jurisdictions, the 465 foot (141-meter) Nord could be seen docked prominently in waters west of Hong Kong\u2019s iconic Victoria Harbour, valued at over 500 million dollars.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Lee, who is due to host an international investment summit in November with top global business leaders, also criticised sanctions imposed by the U.S. on Hong Kong officials for their role in curbing Hong Kong\u2019s freedoms under a China-imposed security law.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">\u201cIt is a very barbaric act and I\u2019m not going to comment.
