{"id":43782,"date":"2022-10-13T13:39:00","date_gmt":"2022-10-13T13:39:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/broadnews\/?p=43782"},"modified":"2022-10-13T13:39:00","modified_gmt":"2022-10-13T13:39:00","slug":"fg-seeks-cooperation-of-communities-for-effective-border-policing","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/broadnews\/2022\/10\/13\/fg-seeks-cooperation-of-communities-for-effective-border-policing\/","title":{"rendered":"FG seeks cooperation of communities for effective border policing"},"content":{"rendered":"<header class=\"entry-header\" aria-label=\"Content\"><\/header>\n<div class=\"entry-content\">\n<div dir=\"auto\">The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/broadnews\/2022\/08\/21\/federal-government-inaugurates-new-exhibition-gallery-in-ibadan\/\">Federal Government<\/a> on Wednesday urged the cooperation of communities across the long stretch of the expansive territorial borders for effective policing.<\/div>\n<div dir=\"auto\"><\/div>\n<div dir=\"auto\">The Director-General of the National Boundary Commission (NBC), Adamu Adaji, made the call in Abuja during a one-day workshop on the establishment of the National Consultative Forum for Chairmen of State Boundary Committees of Border States in Nigeria and Border Management Agencies.<\/div>\n<div dir=\"auto\"><\/div>\n<div dir=\"auto\">The workshop with the theme \u2018Converting Borders from Barriers of Separation to Bridges of Cooperation and Regional Integration\u2019 was organised by the National Boundary Commission (NBC).<\/div>\n<div dir=\"auto\"><\/div>\n<div dir=\"auto\">Adaji in his address said Nigeria has about 4500km land border and around an 850km stretch of the maritime border.<\/div>\n<div dir=\"auto\"><\/div>\n<div dir=\"auto\">\u201cIt is a fact that providing effective <a href=\"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/broadnews\/2022\/07\/12\/community-policing-344-new-police-constables-to-work-in-jigawa\/\">policing<\/a> across the long stretch of the expansive territorial borders would require not only the commitment of the combined security operatives but also the support of the border communities.<\/div>\n<div dir=\"auto\"><\/div>\n<div dir=\"auto\">\u201cThe National Consultative Forum is the first of its kind and without fear of contradiction, would be a veritable platform for regular engagement between state authorities and national structure responsible for border management and regional authorities in proximate countries.<\/div>\n<div dir=\"auto\"><\/div>\n<div dir=\"auto\">\u201cHowever, the engagement with your counterparts in the neighbouring countries would no doubt assist in cross-border development initiatives that would proffer the spot solution to some rising security challenges along the borders.<\/div>\n<div dir=\"auto\"><\/div>\n<div dir=\"auto\">\u201cAs envisaged, the establishment of the forum would be followed by the establishment of a similar platform for the traditional and local authorities at the grassroots levels who would be directly responsible for translating the decisions of the Chairmen and Deputy Governors\u2019 Forum into concrete actions.<\/div>\n<div dir=\"auto\"><\/div>\n<div dir=\"auto\">\u201cThe formal cross border interaction between the local authorities and border communities across the borders would no doubt give the border communities a sense of belonging and alleviate our fears of turning the borders regions into ungoverned spaces and safe haven for terrorists and other transitional organised crimes regions,\u201d Adaji said.<\/div>\n<div dir=\"auto\"><\/div>\n<div dir=\"auto\">Speaking, the Executive Secretary of Border Communities Development Agency (BCDA), retired Capt. Junaid Abdullahi said the agency consider is a major stakeholder in the workshop due to its relevance in the actualization of its mandate.<\/div>\n<div dir=\"auto\"><\/div>\n<div dir=\"auto\">\u201cWe pledge our unflinching support for the desire to transform these fora into an institutional mechanism for the engagement of all border management stakeholders for addressing issues and challenges in the implementation of the AU border governance strategies.<\/div>\n<div dir=\"auto\"><\/div>\n<div dir=\"auto\">\u201cThe harmonisation of our collective effort in the achievement of our individual mandates stands as a guarantee in ensuring greater success,\u201d Abdullahi said.<\/div>\n<div dir=\"auto\"><\/div>\n<div dir=\"auto\">The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that Abdullahi was represented by the Director of Planning, Intergovernmental and community Relations Department of BCDA, Sadiq Isah.<\/div>\n<div dir=\"auto\"><\/div>\n<div dir=\"auto\">Similarly, the Comptroller-General, Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS), Idris Gere, was represented by a Deputy Comptroller General in charge of Border Management, Dr. Mohammed Aminu, said the service was delighted to be in the workshop.<\/div>\n<div dir=\"auto\"><\/div>\n<div dir=\"auto\">\u201cI hope that this forum will provide a veritable platform to deepen the understanding and commitment of stakeholders. NIS as a family of NBC has remained committed to ensuring that harmonious relationships exist among and between the border communities,\u201d Gere said.<\/div>\n<div dir=\"auto\"><\/div>\n<div dir=\"auto\">Also speaking, the National Security Adviser (NSA), retired Maj.-Gen. Babagana Mongono, represented by Gen. Adamu Laka said one of the problems the country is facing is porous borders.<\/div>\n<div dir=\"auto\"><\/div>\n<div dir=\"auto\">According to the NSA, the porousness of the country\u2019s border has become a threat to national security.<\/div>\n<div dir=\"auto\"><\/div>\n<div dir=\"auto\">\u201cNigerian extensive borders lands and maritime borders continue to be a major source of concern as they are likely porous and inadequately man. This had aided irregular migration and other transnational organised crimes.<\/div>\n<div dir=\"auto\"><\/div>\n<div dir=\"auto\">\u201cHowever, the Federal Government would continue to build the resilience of our communities against the risks and hazards that pulls the greatest threat to Nigerian people while reducing our vulnerability,\u201d Mongono said.<\/div>\n<div dir=\"auto\"><\/div>\n<div dir=\"auto\">Similarly, the Comptroller- General, Nigeria Customs Service, retired Col.
