{"id":4422,"date":"2021-12-15T09:30:14","date_gmt":"2021-12-15T09:30:14","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/broadnews\/?p=4422"},"modified":"2021-12-15T09:30:14","modified_gmt":"2021-12-15T09:30:14","slug":"covid-19-research-capacity-has-improved-in-nigeria-nimr-d-g","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/broadnews\/2021\/12\/15\/covid-19-research-capacity-has-improved-in-nigeria-nimr-d-g\/","title":{"rendered":"COVID-19: Research capacity has improved in Nigeria &#8211; NIMR D-G"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The Director-General, Nigerian Institute of Medical Research (NIMR), Prof. Babatunde Salako, has said that the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/broadnews\/2021\/12\/13\/covid-19-update-ncdc-confirms-418-additional-infections-zero-death-recorded\/\">COVID-19 pandemic<\/a> challenged and improved research capacity in Nigeria and Africa.<\/p>\n<p>Salako stated this on Tuesday at the institute\u2019s 2021 annual retreat in Lagos.<\/p>\n<p>He said: \u201cI indeed believe that COVID-19 has challenged the whole world and reawakened a lot of things in countries, especially Africa.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFor African scientists generally, quite a number of things we wouldn\u2019t have believed we can do or attempt were carried out, including ground breaking research works.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEspecially for Nigeria\u2019s sub-medical research, there were things we didn\u2019t have before that we have been clamouring and one of such is a sequencing laboratory that is not common in Africa.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIn NIMR, we were able to acquire so many instrument in relation to sequencing, in relation to management of viral haemorrhagic fever and others through government interventions.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe must commend the federal government for their huge support to the Institute. NIMR received N3billion intervention funds that helped us in some of our research and development activities.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The DG also shed light on some of the achievements and grants received by the Institute, noting that the institute attracted both internal and external research grants.<\/p>\n<p>According to him, the grant aided the institute research works.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe received our grants in various currencies which include N877 million, US$ 87,000, 57,000 pounds and 142,000 Euros from various foundation and bodies across the globe,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>Gains made in the outgoing year will be used to further venture into more research work that would be of benefit to the country, Salako added.<\/p>\n<p>Also speaking at the event was the representative of the World Health Organisation (WHO) in Nigeria, Dr Walter Mulombo who called for continuous effort and solidarity in the continent to curb the spread of COVID-19.<\/p>\n<p>Represented by Dr Ahmed Khedr, Head of WHO Lagos Liaison Office, Mulombo advised scientists to inculcate integrity and dedication when carryout their duties.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAs a continent, it is expected of us to do the needful by contributing towards the fight against COVID-19 through our works.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe must work as researchers and health workers with integrity in all we do to make the world a better place,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>He advised Nigerians to continually adhere to all COVID-19 guidelines of WHO, adding that prevention was important to survival.<\/p>\n<p>The Head, System Study and Review Unit of the Independent Corrupt Practice Commission in Lagos, Mr Japhet Udeanyi also charged NIMR staff on accountability and integrity.<\/p>\n<p>Udeanyi, a guest speaker at the retreat, gave a lecture on Integrity and Accountability in the work place.<\/p>\n<p>SERVICOM also presented an award to the NIMR\u2019s D-G for some of the strides recorded in the institute<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The Director-General, Nigerian Institute of Medical Research (NIMR), Prof. Babatunde Salako, has said that the COVID-19 pandemic challenged and improved research capacity in Nigeria and Africa.
