{"id":45276,"date":"2022-10-21T18:35:41","date_gmt":"2022-10-21T18:35:41","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/broadnews\/?p=45276"},"modified":"2022-10-21T18:37:37","modified_gmt":"2022-10-21T18:37:37","slug":"flooding-puts-over-1-5m-children-at-risk-unicef","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/broadnews\/2022\/10\/21\/flooding-puts-over-1-5m-children-at-risk-unicef\/","title":{"rendered":"Flooding puts over 1.5m children at risk &#8211;UNICEF"},"content":{"rendered":"<header class=\"entry-header\" aria-label=\"Content\"><\/header>\n<div class=\"entry-content\">\n<p>The United Nations Children\u2019s Fund (UNICEF) has said that over 1.5 million children are at an increased risk of waterborne diseases, drowning and malnutrition, due to the devastating flood across the country.<\/p>\n<p>Ms Cristian Munduate, the UNICEF Representative in Nigeria, said this in a statement on Friday in Kaduna.<\/p>\n<p>She said that more than 2.5 million people in Nigeria need humanitarian assistance due to the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/broadnews\/2022\/10\/21\/flood-ravages-otuoke-ex-president-jonathans-countryhome-flooded\/\">flood<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>According to Munduate, the 2022 flood is the \u201cmost severe flooding\u201d in the past decade.<\/p>\n<p>She added that the floods, which affected 34 out of the 36 states in the country, have rendered 1.3 million people homeless.<\/p>\n<p>She also said that over 600 people have lost their lives and over 200,000 houses have either been partially or fully damaged.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Cases of diarrhoea and water-borne diseases, respiratory infection, and skin diseases have already been on the rise.<\/p>\n<p>In the north-eastern states of Borno, Adamawa and Yobe alone, a total of 7,485 cases of cholera and 319 associated deaths were reported as of 12 October.<\/p>\n<p>As rains are expected to continue for several weeks, humanitarian needs are also expected to rise.<\/p>\n<p>Children and adolescents in flood-affected areas are in an extremely vulnerable situation. They are particularly at risk of waterborne diseases and emotional and psychological distress, she said.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Furthermore, she said that UNICEF has been working closely with the government and other partners to provide life-saving assistance to those who are most in need.<\/p>\n<p>Munduate added that the floods were adding another layer of complexity to an already precarious humanitarian situation in the country.<\/p>\n<p>According to her, their priority is the needs of the children, which include health, water, sanitation, and hygiene, as well as shelter and food.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Additional funding and resources are required to respond to growing needs and to sustain ongoing humanitarian interventions, with a focus on the most vulnerable, including children with disabilities.<\/p>\n<p>Nigeria is considered at \u2018extremely high risk\u2019 of the impacts of climate change, ranking second out of 163 countries according to UNICEF\u2019s Children\u2019s Climate Risk Index (CCRI).<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>According to the UNICEF representative, children in \u2018extremely high risk\u2019 countries face a deadly combination of exposure to multiple climate and environmental shocks combined with high levels of underlying child vulnerability.<\/p>\n<p>She added that UNICEF has supported the government response in three affected States \u2013 Jigawa, Niger, and Kaduna.<\/p>\n<p>Some of the support include the provision of cash assistance, distribution of cholera kits, government-led mobile health teams, temporary learning centres and learning kits and cholera kits.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>With additional support, UNICEF can scale up its response in other states to provide lifesaving medical equipment and essential medicines, chlorination of water and sanitation supplies, she added.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>She added that UNICEF will equally support the prevention of and response to sexual and gender-based violence.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The United Nations Children\u2019s Fund (UNICEF) has said that over 1.5 million children are at an increased risk of waterborne diseases, drowning and malnutrition, due to the devastating flood across the country.
