{"id":46124,"date":"2022-10-26T10:06:00","date_gmt":"2022-10-26T10:06:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/broadnews\/?p=46124"},"modified":"2022-10-26T10:06:00","modified_gmt":"2022-10-26T10:06:00","slug":"doctors-decry-challenges-in-healthcare-delivery","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/broadnews\/2022\/10\/26\/doctors-decry-challenges-in-healthcare-delivery\/","title":{"rendered":"Doctors decry challenges in healthcare delivery"},"content":{"rendered":"<header class=\"entry-header\" aria-label=\"Content\">\n<p class=\"entry-title\">Nigeria\u2019s healthcare delivery system has been facing enormous challenges needing serious attention, the Kano branch of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/broadnews\/2022\/10\/12\/doctor-patient-ratio-worsening-in-nigeria-nma-chairman-warns\/\"><strong>Nigeria Medical Association (NMA)<\/strong> <\/a>declared in Kano on Tuesday.<\/p>\n<\/header>\n<div class=\"entry-content\">\n<p>Chairman of the branch, Dr Abdullahi Kabir-Suleiman, made the declaration at the opening of its 2022 Physicians Week.<\/p>\n<p>He listed the challenges to include inadequate manpower as against burgeoning population, lack of state-of-science equipment and increased morbidity and mortality from infectious diseases like malaria and poor remuneration of doctors.<\/p>\n<p>Another serious challenge was that of brain drain among medical personnel to foreign countries in unprecedented large numbers, he noted.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMainly, the brain drain is caused by poor remuneration and lack of enabling environment to practice effectively and efficiently in Nigeria.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBrain drain has worsened the doctor-patient ratio as the ratio is now one doctor to 10,000 patients as against WHO\u2019s recommendation of one doctor to 600 patients.\u2019\u2019 he said.<\/p>\n<p>Kabir-Suleiman called on governments at all levels to strengthen and rescue the healthcare delivery system from total collapse.<\/p>\n<p>He stressed that if drastic measures were not taken to mitigate brain drain, the country\u2019s fragile healthcare will sink into an unprecedented crisis.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe can recall our collective experiences during Ebola outbreak, during COVID-19; during monkeypox and recently during the recent cholera outbreak in flooded parts of the country. Our\u00a0healthcare system needs a holistic reform,\u2019\u2019 he added.<\/p>\n<p>Suleiman said the NMA celebrated the Physician Week annually to create awareness on contemporary national issues and also to give back to the community.<\/p>\n<p>The theme of the week is: \u201cNigeria\u2019s Healthcare Delivery System and the 2023 Democratic Transition: A time to change the narrative.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Nigeria\u2019s healthcare delivery system has been facing enormous challenges needing serious attention, the Kano branch of the Nigeria Medical Association (NMA) declared in Kano on Tuesday.
