{"id":46218,"date":"2022-10-26T13:33:40","date_gmt":"2022-10-26T13:33:40","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/broadnews\/?p=46218"},"modified":"2022-10-26T13:33:40","modified_gmt":"2022-10-26T13:33:40","slug":"alleged-n109bn-fraud-efcc-rearraigns-suspended-agf-idris-others","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/broadnews\/2022\/10\/26\/alleged-n109bn-fraud-efcc-rearraigns-suspended-agf-idris-others\/","title":{"rendered":"Alleged N109bn fraud: EFCC rearraigns suspended AGF Idris, others"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/broadnews\/2022\/09\/02\/ogun-in-need-of-new-administration-dispensation-adc-assembly-candidate\/\">Economic and Financial Crime Commission\u00a0<\/a> <\/strong>(EFCC) on Wednesday rearraigned suspended\u00a0 Accountant-General of the Federation, Ahmed Idris and three others over alleged N109.5 billion fraud in an FCT High Court,\u00a0 Maitama.<\/p>\n<p>Other defendants are Olusegun Akindele; Mohammed Usman and Gezawa Commodity Market and Exchange Limited.<\/p>\n<p>They\u00a0 were first arraigned on July 22 before a vacation judge,\u00a0 Justice\u00a0 Adeyemi Ajayi\u00a0 on a 13-count charge bordering on misappropriation to the tune of N109.5 billion.<\/p>\n<p>However, upon the resumption of the court, the case was transferred to <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/broadnews\/2022\/10\/16\/development-thrives-in-society-where-justice-prevails-says-nba-president\/\">Justice<\/a><\/strong> Yusuf Halilu.<\/p>\n<p>They all pleaded not guilty to the charge preferred against them by EFCC.<\/p>\n<p>Following their not-guilty plea, counsel for Idris, Chris Uche, SAN, prayed the court to allow the defendants continue to enjoy the earlier bail granted them by the court on July 28<\/p>\n<p>He submitted that they have been complying with their bail conditions.<\/p>\n<p>Counsel for other defendants aligned themselves with Uche\u2019s application and submission.<\/p>\n<p>The EFCC Counsel, Oluwaleke Atolagbe, did not object\u00a0 to the application.<\/p>\n<p>He, however, left the decision to the court to exercise its discretion.<\/p>\n<p>Ruling on the application, Justice Halilu held that bail is a constitutional right of a defendant.<\/p>\n<p>He added that having been previously granted bail by the court, he is favourably inclined to allowing the defendants to continuing enjoying the early bail granted them by the court.<\/p>\n<p>He, however, directed that defendants\u00a0 submit their passports to the court\u2019s registrar.<\/p>\n<p>The judge added that if the documents are with the prosecution, it should pass same to the registrar.<\/p>\n<p>Justice Halilu adjourned the case until Nov.\u00a0 23 for hearing.<\/p>\n<p>The EFCC alleged that between February and December, 2021 Idris accepted from\u00a0 Akindele, a gratification of N15. 1 billion, which sum was as a motive for accelerating the payment of 13 per cent derivation to the nine oil producing sates in the Federation, through the office of the <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/broadnews\/2022\/05\/17\/alleged-n80bn-fraud-efcc-arrests-accountant-general-of-the-federation\/\">Accountant General of the Federation.<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The anti-graft agency also alleged that N84. 3billion from the federal government\u2019s account was converted by the first and second defendants between Feb. and Nov. 2021.<\/p>\n<p>The EFCC said the offence contravenes sections 155 and 315 of the Penal Code Act Cap 532 Laws of the Federation of Nigeria 1990.<\/p>\n<p>The defendants pleaded not guilty<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The Economic and Financial Crime Commission\u00a0 (EFCC) on Wednesday rearraigned suspended\u00a0 Accountant-General of the Federation, Ahmed Idris and three others over alleged N109.5 billion fraud in an FCT High Court,\u00a0 Maitama.
