{"id":46752,"date":"2022-10-28T21:46:12","date_gmt":"2022-10-28T21:46:12","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/broadnews\/?p=46752"},"modified":"2022-10-28T21:46:12","modified_gmt":"2022-10-28T21:46:12","slug":"northern-ethiopia-facing-devastating-spike-in-preventable-diseases-who","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/broadnews\/2022\/10\/28\/northern-ethiopia-facing-devastating-spike-in-preventable-diseases-who\/","title":{"rendered":"Northern Ethiopia facing devastating spike in preventable diseases \u2013 WHO"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/broadnews\/2022\/10\/20\/global-leaders-donors-pledge-2-6bn-to-end-polio-who\/\">World Health Organisation (WHO) <\/a>has expressed serious concern about a likely spike in a range of preventable diseases in Ethiopia\u2019s northern regions, particularly Tigray \u2013 caused by nearly two years of conflict.<\/p>\n<p>WHO Team Lead for Ethiopia, Incident Management System and Emergencies Operations, Ilham Abdelhai Nour, said that there were 5.2 million people in need of humanitarian assistance in Tigray.<\/p>\n<p>Nour said that the number included 3.8 million people who were in need of health assistance and we need to reach these people.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe have access in Amhara and Afar, so we know more about the situation there and we were able to intervene and support.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHowever, we do not have access in Tigray; there is no air or road access in Tigray for the last six weeks,\u201d she said at a news conference in Geneva on Friday.<\/p>\n<p>According to WHO, malaria infections have risen by a full 80 per cent in Tigray and by 40 per cent in neighbouring Amhara compared to last year \u2013 although cases are decreasing in Amhara.<\/p>\n<p>But malaria is just one of the deadly threats facing millions of people affected by the conflict and humanitarian agencies have issued repeated alerts on their behalf, since fighting between federal troops and separatists in Tigray erupted in November 2020.<\/p>\n<p>Earlier this month, the UN Aid Coordination Office (OCHA) reported that civilians waiting to receive much-needed humanitarian assistance came under fire.<\/p>\n<p>It also warned that newly displaced people in Tigray\u2019s Zelazele were \u201cin a dire situation with the vast majority sleeping in open areas directly exposed to cold weather and other protection risks\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>WHO Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus \u2013 himself an ethnic Tigrayan \u2013 has echoed widespread concerns about the crisis several times, including last week, when he warned that there was only a \u201cvery narrow window\u201d to prevent genocide there.<\/p>\n<p>Despite the physical and telecommunications access barriers faced by aid teams working in Tigray, enough regular updates have emerged from the region \u2013 sometimes delivered by hand to WHO \u2013 to warrant Friday\u2019s alert, the UN agency insisted.<\/p>\n<p>Citing UN World Food Programme (WFP) data, WHO noted that in Amhara and Afar, 19 per cent and 14 per cent of mainly displaced children under five were now food insecure, while in Tigray, \u201ca staggering\u201d 89 per cent of the population is food insecure and nearly half are severely food insecure.<\/p>\n<p>WHO\u2019s Director of the Health Emergencies Interventions, Altaf Musani said almost one in every three children under five in Tigray is malnourished,<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSevere acute malnutrition among children in the region is six per cent, 65 per cent of children have not received nutritional support in over a year.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Highlighting the clear link between malnutrition and disease, Musani described how basic health services had been cut.<\/p>\n<p>Understanding the true scale of needs has also been complicated by the fact that only 30 per cent of health facilities in Tigray are still able to provide weekly situation reports to WHO.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cImmunisation services (are) a lifeline to children to keep them alive; those services have stopped.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe know that there are confirmed reports of stockouts, IV fluids, antibiotics other treatment medicines don\u2019t exist in those facilities, we\u2019ve had first-hand reports of that information.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>As peace talks between the combatants began this week in South Africa, Tigrayan communities urgently need guaranteed and safe access to provide lifesaving assistance, WHO insisted.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The World Health Organisation (WHO) has expressed serious concern about a likely spike in a range of preventable diseases in Ethiopia\u2019s northern regions, particularly Tigray \u2013 caused by nearly two years of conflict.
