{"id":47185,"date":"2022-10-31T16:04:49","date_gmt":"2022-10-31T16:04:49","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/broadnews\/?p=47185"},"modified":"2022-10-31T16:04:49","modified_gmt":"2022-10-31T16:04:49","slug":"imf-talks-will-not-lead-to-a-debt-haircut-ghana-president","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/broadnews\/2022\/10\/31\/imf-talks-will-not-lead-to-a-debt-haircut-ghana-president\/","title":{"rendered":"IMF talks will not lead to a debt haircut &#8211; Ghana president"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"entry-content\">\n<p>Ghanaian President said talks with the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/broadnews\/2022\/10\/28\/economic-growth-in-asia-pacific-region-to-slow-down-in-2022-2023-imf\/\"><strong>International Monetary Fund<\/strong><\/a> were going well and reassured investors that negotiations would not lead to a reduction in the face value of government bonds.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/broadnews\/2022\/05\/12\/ghana-to-look-beyond-imf-in-handling-debt-minister\/\"><strong>Nana Akufo-Addo<\/strong><\/a> said in a speech to the nation to sought and reassure Ghanaians and the markets that the government can curb an economic crisis that has forced it to turn to the Fund for financial support.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe talks are at advanced stages, and are going well,\u201d Akufo-Addo said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo individual or institutional investor \u2026 will lose their money as a result of our ongoing IMF negotiations.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere will be no haircuts,\u201d he said, denouncing as \u201cfalse rumours\u201d recent reports of a possible such restructuring.<\/p>\n<p>Ghana launched talks with the IMF in July as foreign investors dumped its debt and street protests broke out over economic turmoil that has seen inflation and currency depreciation hit record levels despite repeated and severe lending rate hikes.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI cannot find an example in history when so many malevolent forces have come together at the same time,\u201d Akufo-Addo said.<\/p>\n<p>The Ghanaian cedi has plummeted more than 40 per cent this year, straining importers of both raw and processed materials, while consumer inflation hit a new 21-year high of 37.2 per cent in September on the back of soaring import costs.<\/p>\n<p>The president said the government aimed to restore macroeconomic stability within the next three to six years and to cut the debt-to-GDP ratio to 55 per cent by 2028.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI believe we can and we will find the means to achieve these goals, even if the immediate measures we have to take are painful,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>The IMF estimates Ghana\u2019s debt-to-GDP hitting over 90 per cent by year-end.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Ghanaian President said talks with the International Monetary Fund were going well and reassured investors that negotiations would not lead to a reduction in the face value of government bonds.
