{"id":48068,"date":"2022-11-04T19:33:22","date_gmt":"2022-11-04T19:33:22","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/broadnews\/?p=48068"},"modified":"2022-11-04T19:33:22","modified_gmt":"2022-11-04T19:33:22","slug":"opiah-seeks-private-sector-support-for-public-schools","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/broadnews\/2022\/11\/04\/opiah-seeks-private-sector-support-for-public-schools\/","title":{"rendered":"Opiah seeks private sector support for public schools"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/broadnews\/2022\/08\/11\/fg-to-internalise-global-education-summit\/\">Mr Goodluck Opiah, Minister of State for Education<\/a><\/strong>, has advocated increased private sector for public schools,through funding, to enhance quality of teaching and education in the country.<\/p>\n<p>Opiah made the call on Friday while inaugurating the new administrative building of the Federal Government Girls\u2019 College (FGGC) Owerri.<\/p>\n<p>According to him, funding of schools or education cannot be left for Federal Government alone.<\/p>\n<p>He said the Parent Teacher Association (PTA), private investors and stakeholders should identify progress development, welfare and wellbeing of the public schools around them.<\/p>\n<p>Opiah, who noted that the nation\u2019s economy was no longer as buoyant as before, said there was need for alternatives to funding the education sector.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u201cIf we continue to wait for government to fund everything pertaining schools, we may be lacking in many areas,\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>He noted.<\/p>\n<p>Opiah disclosed that the<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/broadnews\/2022\/11\/03\/federal-government-drills-150-motorised-boreholes-in-adamawa\/\"> Federal Government<\/a> <\/strong>was working to make teaching profession more attractive.<\/p>\n<p>He said the retirement age of teachers had been extended from 60 to 65 years and from 30 to 40 years in service.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u201cThe salary of teachers has also been increased.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFrom next academic session, the Federal Government will commence bursary award for anyone studying education in tertiary institutions,\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>He added.<\/p>\n<p>Opiah said students, who excel in <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/broadnews\/2022\/11\/02\/unicef-adamawa-government-develop-education-development-plan\/\">education<\/a> <\/strong>courses, will receive automatic employment as teachers.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u201cThis will reduce unemployment and improve quality teaching with value,\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>He stressed.<\/p>\n<p>He commended the Principal of the College for her high level of administrative competence,which he said had ensured peace, and harmony among management, staff, students and parents.<\/p>\n<p>While commending the students for being disciplined, he advised them to study hard and obey their teachers and parents.<\/p>\n<p>Earlier in her welcome address, the Principal of the College, Mrs Francisca Obiagwu ,said that the school which was founded in 1973, had attained numerous academic achievements<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u201cIn Federal Government Girls\u2019 College, we do not only concentrate on academics, but we vigorously pursue discipline which is an integral aspect of character moulding,\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Obiagwu said.<\/p>\n<p>The principal appealed for the provision of more classrooms to accommodate the students as well as the raising of the perimeter fence to enhance security.<\/p>\n<p>She also appealed for the installation of solar streetlights and solar panels in the administrative block, dining halls, hostels and classrooms, among other appeals.<\/p>\n<p>Obiagwu commended the <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/broadnews\/2022\/10\/29\/second-chance-education-300-women-adolescents-enroll-in-kaduna\/\">Minister of Education, Mallam Adamu Adamu<\/a><\/strong> for his ingenuity and interventionist strides to ensure that education was given its pride of place in the country.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Mr Goodluck Opiah, Minister of State for Education, has advocated increased private sector for public schools,through funding, to enhance quality of teaching and education in the country.
