{"id":5505,"date":"2021-12-19T07:27:58","date_gmt":"2021-12-19T07:27:58","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/broadnews\/?p=5505"},"modified":"2021-12-19T07:27:58","modified_gmt":"2021-12-19T07:27:58","slug":"fg-urged-to-open-onne-export-corridor","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/broadnews\/2021\/12\/19\/fg-urged-to-open-onne-export-corridor\/","title":{"rendered":"FG urged to open Onne export corridor"},"content":{"rendered":"<div dir=\"auto\">\u00a0The Nigerian led Federal Government has been urged to open the Onne export corridor in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/broadnews\/2021\/12\/13\/pdp-governors-celebrate-rivers-state-gov-wike-at-58\/\">Rivers<\/a> to boost free trade in Africa.<\/div>\n<div dir=\"auto\"><\/div>\n<div dir=\"auto\">This appeal was made by some exporters during the \u201cEnd-of-year performance appraisal and interactive session\u201d, organised for exporters by the Nigerian Export Promotion Council (NEPC) in Owerri.<\/div>\n<div dir=\"auto\"><\/div>\n<div dir=\"auto\">The Coordinator of the Imo Exporters Summit, Eze Emma Ekeh, in his statement stressed that free trade should begin in Nigeria as \u201cthe giant of Africa\u201d.<\/div>\n<div dir=\"auto\"><\/div>\n<div dir=\"auto\">Ekeh, the Traditional Ruler of Ishi Ubomiri in Mbaitoli Local Government Area of the state, also applauded the NEPC for creating an enabling environment for the growth of export activities in the country.<\/div>\n<div dir=\"auto\"><\/div>\n<div dir=\"auto\">He urged exporters to refrain from economic sabotage and promote local content, as a way of promoting the country among the comity of nations.<\/div>\n<div dir=\"auto\"><\/div>\n<div dir=\"auto\">He decried the loss of revenue, accruable to states of the South-South and South-East geo-political zones, describing the development as economic sabotage.<\/div>\n<div dir=\"auto\"><\/div>\n<div dir=\"auto\">\u00a0\u201cIt is economic sabotage that rather than exporting from Onne corridor, which is close to the South-East, we are made to move our products to Lagos, a far distance where we pay duties that should have been paid here,\u201d Ekeh said.<\/div>\n<div dir=\"auto\"><\/div>\n<div dir=\"auto\">Also, in attendance was the Chief Executive Officer, Davmic Wood Viet Ltd., Mr Paschal Dikeocha, who called on state governors of the two geo-political zones to intervene so as to free up exportation from the area.<\/div>\n<div dir=\"auto\"><\/div>\n<div dir=\"auto\">According to him, there will be a reduction in loss of export products to bad roads with greater proximity to the port.<\/div>\n<div dir=\"auto\"><\/div>\n<div dir=\"auto\">\u201cThe Onne corridor is closer, yet we are not allowed to move products from the facility.<\/div>\n<div dir=\"auto\">\u201cWe urge our political leaders and other stakeholders to intervene, with a view to resolving these challenges,\u201d Dikeocha said.<\/div>\n<div dir=\"auto\"><\/div>\n<div dir=\"auto\">Another exporter, Mrs Prisca Onwumere, urged relevant agencies of government to facilitate quality control and consistent product availability.<\/div>\n<div dir=\"auto\"><\/div>\n<div dir=\"auto\">Onwumere called for attitudinal change towards the manufacture of export products and urged the media to constantly promote awareness for made in Nigeria goods.<\/div>\n<div dir=\"auto\"><\/div>\n<div dir=\"auto\">\u201cThe global market does not compromise quality, and for us to survive there, we must collaborate with NEPC and other government agencies for quality control and consistent product availability,\u201d she said.<\/div>\n<div dir=\"auto\"><\/div>\n<div dir=\"auto\">Earlier, NEPC\u2019s Trade Promotion Advisor in Imo, Mr Anthony Ajuruchi, urged exporters to eschew complacency and take advantage of existing federal government\u2019s grants and other incentives initiated for exporters in the country.<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>\u00a0The Nigerian led Federal Government has been urged to open the Onne export corridor in Rivers to boost free trade in Africa.
