{"id":6162,"date":"2021-12-21T08:52:20","date_gmt":"2021-12-21T08:52:20","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/broadnews\/?p=6162"},"modified":"2021-12-21T08:52:20","modified_gmt":"2021-12-21T08:52:20","slug":"alleged-22m-bitcoin-extortion-police-set-up-special-investigation-panel","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/broadnews\/2021\/12\/21\/alleged-22m-bitcoin-extortion-police-set-up-special-investigation-panel\/","title":{"rendered":"Alleged #22M Bitcoin Extortion: Police set up special investigation panel"},"content":{"rendered":"<header class=\"entry-header\">The police have set up a Special Investigation Panel on the alleged extortion of N22 million worth of Bitcoin from some Nigerians by DSP Cordelia Nwawe and others.<\/p>\n<p>Force Public Relations Officer, Mr Frank Mba, stated on Monday in Abuja.<\/p>\n<p>According to him, the panel\u00a0was constituted by the\u00a0Inspector-General of Police, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/broadnews\/2021\/11\/26\/banditry-police-in-zamfara-apprehend-a-suspected-female-arms-supplier-and-others\/\">Mr Usman Baba,<\/a> to\u00a0conduct a transparent investigation into the allegation.<\/p>\n<p>Mba explained that the investigation became imperative following reports in the media about the involvement of the officers in the alleged extortion.<\/p>\n<p>He stated that media reports listed the supposed victims as Morakinyo Peter and Yusuf Dayo, who were allegedly extorted at gunpoint on July 14, 2021 while driving along Ikoyi\/Ajah Expressway, Lagos State.<\/p>\n<p>Mba said the serving officers named in the alleged extortion were attached to the\u00a0Force Criminal Investigations Department (FCID), Alagbon, Lagos.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cConsequently, the police personnel allegedly indicted in the reports have been ordered to report to the Special Investigation Panel, Force Headquarters, Abuja, on Tuesday for questioning.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe Special Investigation Panel is headed by Mr Olaolu Adegbite, Deputy Commissioner of Police at the Force Intelligence Bureau.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAs an experienced and detailed investigator, Adegbite\u00a0is expected to bring his vast knowledge in investigating corruption-related cases to bear in resolving this case,\u2019\u2019 Mba stated.<\/p>\n<p>He enjoined members of the public with similar experiences of high handedness or extortion by the officers, her team or by any other officer at the FCID Alagbon, to come forward.<\/p>\n<p>The FPRO stressed that the idea was to enable the panel to have detailed information that would help it to achieve a holistic investigation.<\/p>\n<p>According to him, it is vital to state that the alleged actions of the police officers in question do not represent the standards and practices of the Nigeria Police Force.<\/p>\n<p>Mba urged the public to remain calm as the Force would provide timely updates and make the outcome of the investigation public.<\/p>\n<\/header>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The police have set up a Special Investigation Panel on the alleged extortion of N22 million worth of Bitcoin from some Nigerians by DSP Cordelia Nwawe and others.
