{"id":669,"date":"2021-11-25T02:37:35","date_gmt":"2021-11-25T02:37:35","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/broadnews\/?p=669"},"modified":"2021-11-25T02:37:35","modified_gmt":"2021-11-25T02:37:35","slug":"legislative-institute-advocates-for-institutional-and-regulatory-frameworks-that-allow-women-to-participate-in-governance","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/broadnews\/2021\/11\/25\/legislative-institute-advocates-for-institutional-and-regulatory-frameworks-that-allow-women-to-participate-in-governance\/","title":{"rendered":"Legislative Institute advocates for institutional and regulatory frameworks that allow women to participate in governance"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The National Institute for Legislative and Democratic Studies (NILDS) has advocated for institutional and regulatory frameworks that would ensure more inclusive and effective participation of women in governance.<\/p>\n<p>Prof. Abubakar Sulaiman, Director-General of NILDS, stated this on Wednesday during a two-day capacity building workshop for female legislators\/politicians and Civil Society Organizations (CSOs) in Abuja.<\/p>\n<p>The event was organized by NILDS in collaboration with UN Women and had the theme &#8220;Lobbying and Law-making in Nigeria.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Sulaiman stated that prior to the outbreak of the Coronavirus pandemic in the country, there had been a decline in political participation, growing voter apathy, and the prevalence of traditional challenges such as undemocratic party nomination processes.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_670\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-670\" style=\"width: 640px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-670 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/broadnews\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/11\/images-25-1.jpeg\" alt=\"\" width=\"640\" height=\"447\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/broadnews\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/11\/images-25-1.jpeg 640w, https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/broadnews\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/11\/images-25-1-300x210.jpeg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 640px) 100vw, 640px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-670\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Prof. Abubakar Sulaiman, Director-General of NILDS<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&#8220;According to a report by the Centre for Democracy and Development (CDD), 2, 970 women were on the ballot in the 2019 general elections, accounting for only 11.36 percent of nominated candidates.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;As the Commonwealth has noted, women continue to be underrepresented in political decision-making processes influencing pandemic management,&#8221; he said.<\/p>\n<p>According to Sulaiman, the situation was not only unacceptable, but also ultimately untenable.<\/p>\n<p>He stated that it was critical to create institutional and regulatory frameworks that would ensure more inclusive and effective participation, particularly as post-COVID-19 structures were put in place.<\/p>\n<p>The director-general went on to say that there was a need to use legislation and other policy measures to address Nigeria&#8217;s long-standing gender inequalities.<\/p>\n<p>Ms Comfort Lamptey, UN Women Country Representative for Nigeria and ECOWAS, stated that achieving gender equality and protecting women&#8217;s rights was critical for Nigeria to meet its deepest aspirations in the Decade of Action as it attempted to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) targets.<\/p>\n<p>Lamptey, represented by Mr Desmond Osemhenjie, stated that UN Women is committed to assisting Nigeria in this regard.<\/p>\n<p>Also speaking, Felicia Bassey, Deputy Speaker of the Akwa-Ibom State House of Assembly, stated that the number of female legislators in the country is insignificant.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_671\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-671\" style=\"width: 620px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-671 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/broadnews\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/11\/images-26-1.jpeg\" alt=\"\" width=\"620\" height=\"413\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/broadnews\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/11\/images-26-1.jpeg 620w, https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/broadnews\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/11\/images-26-1-300x200.jpeg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 620px) 100vw, 620px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-671\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Ms Comfort Lamptey, UN Women Country Representative for Nigeria and ECOWAS<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&#8220;We are few in number; if one has a bill for the benefit of women and children, the men will not give us what we want.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We&#8217;re here to learn about lobbying and legislation because you have to know what you&#8217;re putting on the table to get your bill passed,&#8221;
