{"id":7549,"date":"2021-12-28T09:27:50","date_gmt":"2021-12-28T09:27:50","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/broadnews\/?p=7549"},"modified":"2021-12-28T09:27:50","modified_gmt":"2021-12-28T09:27:50","slug":"exploit-economic-potentials-of-inland-waterways-dg-nimasa-urges-stakeholders","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/broadnews\/2021\/12\/28\/exploit-economic-potentials-of-inland-waterways-dg-nimasa-urges-stakeholders\/","title":{"rendered":"Exploit economic potentials of inland waterways &#8211; DG NIMASA urges stakeholders"},"content":{"rendered":"<p dir=\"ltr\">The Director-General, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/broadnews\/2021\/12\/17\/nigerian-navy-reiterates-commitment-to-protect-maritime-environment\/\">Nigerian Maritime Administration and Safety Agency<\/a> (NIMASA), Dr Bashir Jamoh, has urged stakeholders to leverage the use of Nigeria\u2019s over 10,500 km inland waterways to enhance transportation and boost the economy.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">Jamoh stated this in a chat with journalists on Saturday, in Kaduna.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">He said that the potential of the inland waterways was huge and that government especially, should creatively seek to utilise it.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">According to him, the government should develop short, medium and long term plans to dredge the rivers and properly harness the resources.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">\u201cIf you go to Egypt, it is artificial lake they use; if we dredge the rivers such as River Kaduna, it will be as good as the sea.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">\u201cWhatever resources you can have in our sea, you can have it there. The maritime asset you can have in our sea, you can have it here.\u201d<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">Jamoh said apart from enhancing transportation, provision of infrastructure for the hospitality industry and connecting roads to villages would open the rural economy for the benefit of the country.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">\u201cWhen you\u2019ve the hospitality industry, you can imagine the kind of economy, the level of employment that you can generate and the tourism potentials available.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">\u201cAll we need to do is to assess what we have, including the mineral deposits under the water; it\u2019s a matter of conducting research,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">According to him, the waterways also have huge potentials for fisheries, which should be exploited properly, including using fishing trawlers.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">It\u2019s a huge industry out there, from those owning the fishing trawlers, those working on it, how we process the fish and others.
