{"id":8044,"date":"2022-01-04T15:41:57","date_gmt":"2022-01-04T15:41:57","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/broadnews\/?p=8044"},"modified":"2022-01-04T15:41:57","modified_gmt":"2022-01-04T15:41:57","slug":"virologist-insists-healthcare-facilities-should-be-infections-prevention-control-compliant","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/broadnews\/2022\/01\/04\/virologist-insists-healthcare-facilities-should-be-infections-prevention-control-compliant\/","title":{"rendered":"Virologist insists healthcare facilities should be infections prevention control compliant"},"content":{"rendered":"<p dir=\"ltr\">LDr Solomon Chollom, a virologist, has observed that healthcare facilities ought to be infections prevention control compliant to mitigate the spread of infections.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">Chollom, a pioneer National Secretary, Society for Scientists in Infectious Diseases (SSID) in Nigeria, made the call on Monday in Jos during a telephone interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN).<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">According to him, it has become important for caregivers to comply with the infections prevention control procedures to ensure that the healthcare facilities would be safe for patients and healthcare givers.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">He noted that as the world \u201cis battling with highly contagious infections\u201d such as the SARS and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/broadnews\/2021\/12\/27\/nigeria-records-1547-covid-19-infections\/\">COVID virus,<\/a> among others, health workers must adhere strictly to infection control procedures.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">The virologist further called for a holistic audit of the infections prevention control infrastructure in the country\u2019s healthcare facilities.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">He expressed concern that most healthcare facilities in Nigeria either had no institution-based health and safety policy framework or lack the capacity to implement the policy conscientiously.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">According to him, health facilities must ensure full implementation of infection prevention control and have vanguards to monitor compliance<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">The virologist further said that waste management in healthcare facilities should be handled by qualified professionals to avoid transmission of infections.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">\u201cWaste in most healthcare facilities in the country are handled and managed by those with the least qualification to handle which poses a huge health risk.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">\u201cThe practice of having people\u2019s without the least qualifications in the hospitals to handle and manage biomedical waste is unprofessional,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>LDr Solomon Chollom, a virologist, has observed that healthcare facilities ought to be infections prevention control compliant to mitigate the spread of infections.
