Following the resignation of Sudanese Prime Minister Abdullah Hamdok<\/a>, the United States is pushing for the East African country to regain a civilian government.<\/p>\n

\u201cAfter PM Hamdok\u2019s resignation, Sudanese leaders should set aside differences, find consensus, and ensure continued civilian rule,\u2019\u2019 the U.S. State Department\u2019s Bureau of African Affairs said on Twitter.<\/p>\n

\u201cSudan\u2019s next PM and Cabinet should be appointed in line with the constitutional declaration to meet the people\u2019s goals of freedom, peace, and justice.\u2019\u2019<\/p>\n

Hamdok resigned on Sunday night after weeks of street protests against the government and tensions with the country\u2019s military rulers.<\/p>\n

Whether there will be a successor remained unclear at first.<\/p>\n

Hamdok was ousted in a military coup on Oct. 25, 2021, and was only reinstated after pressure from home and abroad.<\/p>\n

There have been repeated protests against the military\u2019s continued participation in government with Hamdok accused of treason.<\/p>\n

Sudan was ruled for almost 30 years by Omar al-Bashir.<\/p>\n

The long-term strongman was forced out of office in April 2019 by months of mass protests and a military coup.<\/p>\n

The military and the civilian opposition then agreed on a transitional government to pave the way for democratic elections.<\/p>\n

In addition, extensive economic reforms were planned, which would have caused the military to suffer considerable economic losses.<\/p>\n

The military was also opposed to Hamdok\u2019s efforts to deal with human rights violations.<\/p>\n
