{"id":911,"date":"2021-11-26T12:12:52","date_gmt":"2021-11-26T12:12:52","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/broadnews\/?p=911"},"modified":"2021-11-26T12:15:24","modified_gmt":"2021-11-26T12:15:24","slug":"911","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/broadnews\/2021\/11\/26\/911\/","title":{"rendered":"COVID 19: Conference assigns journalists to cover mental health issues"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Mr Godwin Odemijie, Board Chairman of Nigeria Health Journalists, tasked journalists on Friday to focus more on mental health issues that are currently affecting many Nigerians in their reporting.<\/p>\n<p>On Friday, Odemijie made the call during the two-day Annual Conference of the Association of Nigeria Health Journalists (ANHEJ), which was held in Auta Balefi, Nasarawa State.<\/p>\n<p>The theme of the conference is &#8220;Improving Confidence in the COVID-19 Vaccine in Nigeria Beyond 2021: The Role of the Media.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>He advised journalists to develop the habit of writing more investigative and human-interest stories in order to reduce the rising cases of mental illness caused by today&#8217;s harsh global realities.<\/p>\n<p>According to him, many Nigerians are suffering from mental illness without realizing it due to a lack of information on the subject.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_913\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-913\" style=\"width: 709px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-913\" src=\"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/broadnews\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/11\/images-97.jpeg\" alt=\"\" width=\"709\" height=\"377\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/broadnews\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/11\/images-97.jpeg 709w, https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/broadnews\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/11\/images-97-300x160.jpeg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 709px) 100vw, 709px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-913\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">A two-day Annual Conference of the Association of Nigeria Health Journalists (ANHEJ), which was held in Auta Balefi, Nasarawa State<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&#8220;Mental health is a major issue in the country right now, but no one is talking about it.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Journalists must focus on mental health in order to detect it early,&#8221; he said.<\/p>\n<p>Odemijie tasked journalists with delving deeper into current issues rather than relying on press statements to inform the public.<\/p>\n<p>Comrade Emmanuel Ogbeche, Chairman of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), FCT Chapter, expressed disappointment that agencies such as those in charge of COVID-19 were not represented at the conference.<\/p>\n<p>Ogbeche, who expressed gratitude to the international organizations that supported the conference, stated that many Nigerians&#8217; refusal to accept the COVID-19 vaccine was due to religious, ethnic, and political factors.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;As journalists, we must walk the walk; we must demonstrate that we believe what we preach in order to encourage people to get vaccinated.&#8221;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Mr Godwin Odemijie, Board Chairman of Nigeria Health Journalists, tasked journalists on Friday to focus more on mental health issues that are currently affecting many Nigerians in their reporting.
